Polarization observables in double neutral pion photoproduction

Abstract: Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction $γがんまp\to pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Linearly polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. The… ▽ More Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction $γがんまp\to pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. The data cover the photon energy range from $E_γがんま$=650 MeV to $E_γがんま$=2600 MeV and nearly the complete angular range. The results have been included in the BnGa partial wave analysis. Experimental results and the fit agree very well. Observed systematic differences in the branching ratios for decays of $N^*$ and $Δでるた^*$ resonances are attributed to the internal structure of these excited nucleon states. Resonances which can be assigned to SU(6)$\times$O(3) two-oscillator configurations show larger branching ratios to intermediate states with non-zero intrinsic orbital angular momenta than resonances assigned to one-oscillator configurations. △ Less

Abstract: High statistics measurements of the photon asymmetry $\mathrmΣしぐま$ for the $\overrightarrowγがんま$p$\rightarrowπぱい^{0}$p reaction have been made in the center of mass energy range W=1214-1450 MeV. The data were measured with the MAMI A2 real photon beam and Crystal Ball/TAPS detector systems in Mainz, Germany. The results significantly improve the existing world data and are shown to be in good agreement wi… ▽ More High statistics measurements of the photon asymmetry $\mathrmΣしぐま$ for the $\overrightarrowγがんま$p$\rightarrowπぱい^{0}$p reaction have been made in the center of mass energy range W=1214-1450 MeV. The data were measured with the MAMI A2 real photon beam and Crystal Ball/TAPS detector systems in Mainz, Germany. Abstract: Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of $πぱい^0πぱい^0$ pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508… ▽ More Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of $πぱい^0πぱい^0$ pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557~MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400~MeV. The data from the free proton target are in good agreement with previous measurements and were only used to test the analysis procedures. The results for differential cross sections (angular distributions and invariant-mass distributions) for free and quasi-free protons are almost identical in shape, but differ in absolute magnitude up to 15\%. Thus, moderate final-state interaction effects are present. The data for quasi-free neutrons are similar to the proton data in the second resonance region (final state invariant masses up to $\approx$1550~MeV), where both reactions are dominated by the $N(1520)3/2^-\rightarrow Δでるた(1232)3/2^+πぱい$ decay. At higher energies, angular and invariant-mass distributions are different. A simple analysis of the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions in the third resonance region is consistent with strong contributions of an $N^{\star}\rightarrow Nσしぐま$ decay for the proton, while the reaction is dominated by a sequential decay via a $Δでるたπぱい$ intermediate state for the neutron. The data are compared to predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID model and the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel analysis. △ Less

The quasi-free reactions $γがんまp\rightarrow pπぱい^0ηいーた$, $γがんまn\rightarrow nπぱい^0ηいーた$, $γがんまp\rightarrow nπぱい^+ηいーた$, and $γがんまn\rightarrow pπぱい^-ηいーた$ were for the first time measured from nucleons bound in the deuteron. The corresponding reactions from a free-proton target were also studied to investigate final-state interaction effects (for neutral pions the free-proton results could be compared to previous measurements; the $γがんまp\rightarrow nπぱい^+ηいーた$ reaction was measured for the first time). For the $πぱい^0ηいーた$ final state coherent production via the $γがんまd\rightarrow dπぱい^0ηいーた$ reaction was also investigated. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost $4πぱい$ coverage electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The total cross sections for the four different final states obey the relation $σしぐま(pπぱい^0ηいーた)$ $\approx$ $σしぐま(nπぱい^0ηいーた)$ $\approx$ $2σしぐま(pπぱい^-ηいーた)$ $\approx$ $2σしぐま(nπぱい^+ηいーた)$ as expected for a dominant contribution from a $Δでるた^{\star}\rightarrowηいーたΔでるた(1232)\rightarrowπぱいηいーたN$ reaction chain, which is also supported by the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions of nucleon-meson and $πぱい$-$ηいーた$ pairs. Quasifree photoproduction of $ηいーた$ mesons off protons and neutrons

Abstract: Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions $γがんまp\rightarrowηいーたp$ and $γがんまn\rightarrowηいーたn$ have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes $ηいーた\rightarrow 2γがんま$ and… ▽ More Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions $γがんまp\rightarrowηいーたp$ and $γがんまn\rightarrowηいーたn$ have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes $ηいーた\rightarrow 2γがんま$ and $ηいーた\rightarrow 3πぱい^0 \rightarrow 6γがんま$ and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combined setup of the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters. The $ηいーた$-production cross sections were measured in coincidence with recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and in an inclusive mode without a condition on recoil nucleons, which allowed a check of the internal consistency of the data. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the final-state invariant mass and possible nuclear effects on the quasifree cross section were investigated by a comparison of free and quasifree proton data. The results, which represent a significant improvement in statistical quality compared to previous measurements, agree with the known neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio in the peak of the $S_{11}(1535)$ resonance and confirm a peak in the neutron cross section, which is absent for the proton, at a center-of-mass energy $W = (1670\pm 5)$ MeV with an intrinsic width of $Γがんま\approx 30$ MeV. △ Less

Abstract: Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the photoproduction of $πぱい^{0}$-mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state. The charged pions, recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and decay photons from $πぱい^0$ mesons were detected in the 4$πぱい$ electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. Using a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state, excellent agreement was found between the results for free and quasi-free protons, suggesting that the quasi-free neutron results are also a close approximation of the free-neutron asymmetries. A comparison of the results to the predictions of the Two-Pion-MAID reaction model shows that the reaction mechanisms are still not well understood, in particular at low incident photon energies in the second nucleon-resonance region. △ Less

The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of $^{208}$Pb has a halo character. Abstract: The Dalitz decay eta -> e^+ e^- gamma has been measured in the gamma p -> eta p reaction with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers, together with the photon tagging facility at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. The experimental statistic used in this work is one order of magnitude greater than in any previous measurement of eta -> e^+ e^- gamma. The corresponding effects are found to be large and must be carefully considered in the search for possible in-medium modifications of the $σしぐま$-meson. Results from a transport model calculation reproduce the shape of the invariant-mass distributions for the mixed-charge pairs better than for the neutral pairs, but also for the latter differences between model results and experiment are not large, leaving not much room for $σしぐま$-in-medium modification. △ Less

Coherent photoproduction of pi^0- and eta-mesons off 7Li

Abstract: Coherent photoproduction of $πぱい^0$-mesons from threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 136 MeV) throughout the $Δでるた$-resonance region and of $ηいーた$-mesons close to the production threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 570 MeV for $ηいーた$) has been measured for $^7$Li nuclei. The experiment was performed using the tagged-photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4… ▽ More Coherent photoproduction of $πぱい^0$-mesons from threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 136 MeV) throughout the $Δでるた$-resonance region and of $ηいーた$-mesons close to the production threshold ($E_{th} \approx$ 570 MeV for $ηいーた$) has been measured for $^7$Li nuclei. The experiment was performed using the tagged-photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors combined to give an almost 4$πぱい$ solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeter. The reactions were identified by a combined invariant-mass and missing-energy analysis. A comparison of the pion data to plane-wave impulse modelling tests the nuclear mass form factor. So far coherent $ηいーた$-production had been only identified for the lightest nuclear systems ($^2$H and $^3$He). For $^3$He a large enhancement of the cross section above plane-wave approximations had been reported, indicating the formation of a quasi-bound state. The present Li-data for $ηいーた$-production agree with a plane-wave approximation. Contrary to $^3$He, neither a threshold enhancement of the total cross section nor a deviation of the angular distributions from the expected form-factor dependence were observed. △ Less

Determination of the ηいーた mass with the Crystal Ball at MAMI-B

Abstract: A new precise determination of the ηいーた meson mass is presented. It is based on a measurement of the threshold for the γがんまp -> pηいーた reaction using the tagger focal-plane microscope detector at the MAMI-B facility in Mainz. The tagger microscope has a higher energy resolution than the standard tagging spectrometer and, hence, allowed an improvement in the accuracy compared to the previous ηいーた mass measureme… ▽ More A new precise determination of the ηいーた meson mass is presented. It is based on a measurement of the threshold for the γがんまp -> pηいーた reaction using the tagger focal-plane microscope detector at the MAMI-B facility in Mainz. Abstract: Precise total cross-sections and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for photoproduction of pion pairs off the proton producing $pπぱい^0πぱい^0$ and $nπぱい^+πぱい^0$ final states from the threshold region up to 800 MeV incident photon energy. Abstract: The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation… ▽ More The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. For the proton measurements made with both liquid deute… ▽ More Differential cross-sections for quasi-free $πぱい^0$ photoproduction from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured for $E_γがんま= 200 - 400$ MeV at $θしーた^{\rm lab}_γがんま= 136.2^\circ$ usind the Glasgow photon tagger at MAMI, the Mainz 48 cm $\varnothing$ $\times$ 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the Göttingen SENECA recoil detector. For the proton measurements made with both liquid deuterium and liquid hydrogen targets allow direct comparison of "free" $πぱい^0$ photoproduction cross-sections as extracted from the bound proton data with experimental free cross sections which are found to be in reasonable agreement below 320 MeV. At higher energies the "free" cross sections extracted from quasifree data are significantly smaller than the experimental free cross sections and theoretical predictions based on multipole analysis. For the first time, "free" neutron cross sections have been extracted in the $Δでるた$-region. They are also in agreement with the predictions from multipole analysis up to 320 MeV and significantly smaller at higher photon energies. △ Less

Quasi-free Compton Scattering and the Polarizabilities of the Neutron

Abstract: Differential cross sections for quasi-free Compton scattering from the proton and neutron bound in the deuteron have been measured using the Glasgow/Mainz tagging spectrometer at the Mainz MAMI accelerator together with the Mainz 48 cm $\oslash$ $\times$ 64 cm NaI(Tl) photon detector and the Göttingen SENECA recoil detector. Liquid deuterium and hydrogen targets allowed direct comparison of free and quasi-free scattering from the proton. The neutron detection efficiency of the SENECA detector was measured via the reaction $p(γがんま,πぱい^+ n)$. The "free" proton Compton scattering cross sections extracted from the bound proton data are in reasonable agreement with those for the free proton which gives confidence in the method to extract the differential cross section for free scattering from quasi-free data. Differential cross sections on the free neutron have been extracted and the difference of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the neutron have been obtained to be $αあるふぁ-βべーた= 9.8\pm 3.6(stat){}^{2.1}_1.1(syst)\pm 2.2(model)$ in units $10^{-4}fm^3$. In combination with the polarizability sum $αあるふぁ+βべーた=15.2\pm 0.5$ deduced from photoabsorption data, the neutron electric and magnetic polarizabilities, $αあるふぁ_n=12.5\pm 1.8(stat){}^{+1.1}_{-0.6}\pm 1.1(model)$ and $βべーた_n=2.7\mp 1.8(stat){}^{+0.6}_{-1.1}(syst)\mp 1.1(model)$ are obtained. The backward spin polarizability of the neutron was determined to be $γがんま^{(n)}_πぱい=(58.6\pm 4.0)\times 10^{-4}fm^4$. △ Less
