High Precision Measurement of Compton Scattering in the 5 GeV region

Abstract: The cross section of atomic electron Compton scattering $γがんま+ e \rightarrow γがんま^\prime + e^\prime $ was measured in the 4.40--5.475 GeV photon beam energy region by the {\em PrimEx} collaboration at Jefferson Lab with an accuracy of 2\% and less. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions that include next-to-leading order radiative corrections. Study of Xi Photoproduction from Threshold to W = 3.3 GeV

Abstract: Exclusive photoproduction cross sections have been measured for the process $γがんまp \rightarrow pπぱい^0(e^+e^-(γがんま))$ with the Dalitz decay final state using tagged photon energies in the range of $E_γがんま = 1.275-5.425$ GeV. The complete angular distribution of the final state $πぱい^0$, for the entire photon energy range up to large values of $t$ and $u$, has been measured for the first time. The data obtained show that the cross section $dσしぐま/dt$, at mid to large angles, decreases with energy as $s^{-6.89\pm 0.26} $. This is in agreement with the perturbative QCD quark counting rule prediction of $s^{-7} $. Paradoxically, the size of angular distribution of measured cross sections is greatly underestimated by the QCD based Generalized Parton Distribution mechanism at highest available invariant energy $s=11$ GeV$^2$. At the same time, the Regge exchange based models for $πぱい^0$ photoproduction are more consistent with experimental data. △ Less

This is enhanced if the measured 4-momentum transfer to the proton target is restricted to be less than 1.0 GeV2. By comparing data with simulations, it can be concluded that the peak at 1500 MeV is produced primarily at low t, which is consistent with a t-channel production mechanism. △ Less

On the Partial-Wave Analysis of Mesonic Resonances Decaying to Multiparticle Final States Produced by Polarized Photons

Abstract: Meson spectroscopy is going through a revival with the advent of high statistics experiments and new advances in the theoretical predictions. The Constituent Quark Model (CQM) is finally being expanded considering more basic principles of field theory and using discrete calculations of Quantum Chromodynamics (lattice QCD). These new calculations are approaching predictive power for the spectrum of… ▽ More Meson spectroscopy is going through a revival with the advent of high statistics experiments and new advances in the theoretical predictions. The Constituent Quark Model (CQM) is finally being expanded considering more basic principles of field theory and using discrete calculations of Quantum Chromodynamics (lattice QCD). These new calculations are approaching predictive power for the spectrum of hadronic resonances and decay modes. It will be the task of the new experiments to extract the meson spectrum from the data and compare with those predictions. The goal of this report is to describe one particular technique for extracting resonance information from multiparticle final states. The technique described here, partial wave analysis based on the helicity formalism, has been used at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) using pion beams, and Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) using photon beams. In particular this report broadens this technique to include production experiments using linearly polarized real photons or quasi-real photons. This article is of a didactical nature. We describe the process of analysis, detailing assumptions and formalisms, and is directed towards people interested in starting partial wave analysis. △ Less

Abstract: We have measured cross sections for the gamma+3He->p+d reaction at photon energies of 0.4 - 1.4 GeV and a center-of-mass angle of 90 deg. We observe dimensional scaling above 0.7 GeV at this center-of-mass angle. This is the first observation of dimensional scaling in the photodisintegration of a nucleus heavier than the deuteron. We have measured cross sections for the gamma+3He->p+d reaction at photon energies of 0.4 - 1.4 GeV and a center-of-mass angle of 90 deg. We observe dimensional scaling above 0.7 GeV at this center-of-mass angle. Abstract: Experimental results on the $Σしぐま^+(1189)$ hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson laboratory are presented. The $Σしぐま^+(1189)$ was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction $γがんま+p\rightarrow K^{0}_{S} + Σしぐま^+(1189)$ via the $Σしぐま^{+} \to p πぱい^{0}$ decay mode. The $K^{0}_S$ was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions… ▽ More Experimental results on the $Σしぐま^+(1189)$ hyperon transverse polarization in photoproduction on a hydrogen target using the CLAS detector at Jefferson laboratory are presented. The $Σしぐま^+(1189)$ was reconstructed in the exclusive reaction $γがんま+p\rightarrow K^{0}_{S} + Σしぐま^+(1189)$ via the $Σしぐま^{+} \to p πぱい^{0}$ decay mode. The $K^{0}_S$ was reconstructed in the invariant mass of two oppositely charged pions with the $πぱい^0$ identified in the missing mass of the detected $pπぱい^+πぱい^-$ final state. Experimental data were collected in the photon energy range $E_γがんま$ = 1.0-3.5 GeV ($\sqrt{s}$ range 1.66-2.73 GeV). We observe a large negative polarization of up to 95%. As the mechanism of transverse polarization of hyperons produced in unpolarized photoproduction experiments is still not well understood, these results will help to distinguish between different theoretical models on hyperon production and provide valuable information for the searches of missing baryon resonances. △ Less

Near Threshold Neutral Pion Electroproduction at High Momentum Transfers and Generalized Form Factors

These measurements allow us to access the dominant pion-nucleon s-wave multipoles $E_{0+}$ and $S_{0+}$ in the near-threshold region. Inclusion of only longitudinal GPDs very strongly underestimates $σしぐま_T +εいぷしろんσしぐま_L$ and fails to account for $σしぐま_{TT}$ and $σしぐま_{LT}$, while inclusion of transversity GPDs brings the calculations into substantially better agreement with the data. There is very strong sensitivity to the relative contributions of nucleon helicity flip and helicity non-flip processes. The results confirm that exclusive $πぱい^0$ electroproduction offers direct experimental access to the transversity GPDs. △ Less

The large acceptance and good resolution of $\rm{CLAS}$, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the $γがんま^* p \to n πぱい^+$ p… ▽ More The exclusive electroproduction of $πぱい^+$ above the resonance region was studied using the $\rm{CEBAF}$ Large Acceptance Spectrometer ($\rm{CLAS}$) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of $\rm{CLAS}$, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the $γがんま^* p \to n πぱい^+$ process in 140 ($Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$) bins: $0.16<x_B<0.58$, 1.6 GeV$^2<$$Q^2$$<4.5$ GeV$^2$ and 0.1 GeV$^2<$$-t$$<5.3$ GeV$^2$. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a few percent. Differential cross sections are compared to two theoretical models, based either on hadronic (Regge phenomenology) or on partonic (handbag diagram) degrees of freedom. Both can describe the gross features of the data reasonably well, but differ strongly in their ingredients. If the handbag approach can be validated in this kinematical region, our data contain the interesting potential to experimentally access transversity Generalized Parton Distributions. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the differential cross section on $φふぁい$-meson photoproduction from deuterium near the production threshold for a proton using the CLAS detector and a tagged-photon beam in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurement was carried out by a triple coincidence detection of a proton, $K^+$ and $K^-$ near the theoretical production threshold of 1.57 GeV. Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

Abstract: We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. Light Vector Mesons in the Nuclear Medium

Abstract: The light vector mesons ($ρろー$, $ωおめが$, and $φふぁい$) were produced in deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible in-medium modifications to the properties of the $ρろー$ meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to $e^{+}e^{-}$. The rare leptonic decay was chosen to r… ▽ More The light vector mesons ($ρろー$, $ωおめが$, and $φふぁい$) were produced in deuterium, carbon, titanium, and iron targets in a search for possible in-medium modifications to the properties of the $ρろー$ meson at normal nuclear densities and zero temperature. The vector mesons were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) via their decays to $e^{+}e^{-}$. The rare leptonic decay was chosen to reduce final-state interactions. A combinatorial background was subtracted from the invariant mass spectra using a well-established event-mixing technique. The $ρろー$ meson mass spectrum was extracted after the $ωおめが$ and $φふぁい$ signals were removed in a nearly model-independent way. Comparisons were made between the $ρろー$ mass spectra from the heavy targets ($A > 2$) with the mass spectrum extracted from the deuterium target. With respect to the $ρろー$-meson mass, we obtain a small shift compatible with zero. Also, we measure widths consistent with standard nuclear many-body effects such as collisional broadening and Fermi motion. △ Less

Cascade production in the reactions gamma p --> K+ K+ (X) and gamma p --> K^+ K^+ pi- (X)

Abstract: Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γがんまp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γがんまp \to K^+ K^+ πぱい^- (X)$. The mass split of the $Ξくしー$ doublet is measured to be $5.4\pm 1.8$ MeV/c$^2$, consistent with existing measurements. The differential (total) cross sections for the $Ξくしー^{-}$ have been determined for photon beam energies from 2.75 to 3.85 (4.75) GeV, and are consistent… ▽ More Photoproduction of the cascade resonances has been investigated in the reactions $γがんまp \to K^+ K^+ (X)$ and $γがんまp \to K^+ K^+ πぱい^- (X)$.
