The measurement of the central exclusive production of charged hadron pairs $h^{+}h^{-}$ ($h = π, K, p$) by the STAR experiment at RHIC is reported. The data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV were used in this study. The pairs of charged hadrons produced in the reaction $pp\to p^\prime+h^{+}h^{-}+p^\prime$ were reconstructed from the tracks in the central detector, while the forward-scattered protons were measured in the Roman Pot system. Differential cross sections were measured in the fiducial region determined by the geometrical acceptance of the experimental setup. They were compared to phenomenological predictions based on the Double Pomeron Exchange model. The fiducial $π^+π^-$ cross section was extrapolated to the Lorentz-invariant region, which allowed decomposition of the invariant mass spectrum into continuum and resonant contributions.

Jet substructure, which provides access to the evolution of jet splittings, is expected to be sensitive to interactions between the medium and the jet, providing the opportunity to further constrain both jet and medium properties. By utilizing grooming techniques, we can focus on the most pertinent hard splittings. Of particular interest is the search for large transverse momentum kicks which may indicate the presence of point-like scatters within the Quark-Gluon Plasma. We explore the jet substructure of inclusive jets in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV, utilizing Soft Drop and other grooming methods, as well as the Lund Plane, in order to access the hardest jet splitting, with a particular focus on the hardest $k_{\mathrm{T}}$ splitting.

The future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) is an accelerator-based international center for fundamental and applied research, which presently is under construction in Darmstadt, Germany. An important part of the program is devoted to questions related to astrophysics, including the origin of elements in the universe and the properties of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions, which are relevant for our understanding of the structure of neutron stars and the dynamics of supernova explosions and neutron star mergers. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR is designed to measure promising observables in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, which are expected to be sensitive to the high-density equation-of-state (EOS) of nuclear matter and to new phases of QCD matter at high densities. The CBM physics program, the relevant observables and the experimental setup will be discussed.

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7) s$^{-1}$ for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7) s$^{-1}$ for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

The ALICE Collaboration will undertake a major upgrade of the detector apparatus during the second LHC Long Shutdown LS2 (2019-2020) in view of the Runs 3 and 4 (2021-2029). The objective of the upgrade is two-fold: i) an improvement of the tracking precision and efficiency, in particular in the low-momentum range; ii) an improvement of the readout capabilities of the experiment, in order to fully exploit the luminosity for heavy ions envisaged after LS2. The first goal will be achieved by replacing the Inner Tracking System with a new tracker, composed of seven layers of silicon pixel detectors. The new tracker will be made up of about 25000 Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors with fast readout, resulting in a material thickness reduced to 0.3% (inner layers) - 1% (outer layers) of the radiation length and a granularity of $28\times28$ $μ$m$^2$. The second goal will be achieved, among other measures, by replacing the readout chambers of the 90 m$^3$ Time Projection Chamber with Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors. In particular, the new readout chambers will consist of stacks of 4 Gas Electron Multiplier foils combining different hole pitches. The upgraded detector will operate continuously without the use of a triggered gating grid. It will thus be able to record all Pb--Pb collisions at the LHC interaction rate of 50 kHz.

We present results for the QCD Equation of State at non-zero chemical potentials corresponding to the conserved charges in QCD using Taylor expansion upto sixth order in the baryon number, electric charge and strangeness chemical potentials. The latter two are constrained by the strangeness neutrality and a fixed electric charge to baryon number ratio. In our calculations, we use the Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ) discretization scheme at physical quark masses and at different values of the lattice spacings to control lattice cut-off effects. Furthermore we calculate the pressure along lines of constant energy density, which serve as proxies for the freeze-out conditions and discuss their dependence on $μ_B$ , which is necessary for hydrodynamic modelling near freezeout. We also provide an estimate of the radius of convergence of the Taylor series from the 6th order coefficients which provides a new constraint on the location of the critical end-point in the T-$μ_B$ plane of the QCD phase diagram.

We study single-particle potential of hyperons in nuclear medium starting from QCD. First we carry out lattice QCD numerical simulation to extract baryon-baryon interactions from QCD by means of the HAL QCD method. We employ a full QCD gauge configuration ensemble at almost physical point so that hadron masses are nearly physical, e.g. pion mass is 146 MeV, kaon mass is 525 MeV, and nucleon mass is 956 MeV. Then, with some simplifications, we apply the obtained hyperon interactions to the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory and calculate single-particle potential of hyperons in nuclear medium $U_{Y}(ρ,k)$. For the symmetric nuclear matter at the normal nuclear matter density, we obtain $U_Λ(ρ_0,0)=-33$ MeV, $U_Σ(ρ_0,0)=+11$ MeV, and $U_Ξ(ρ_0,0)=-6$ MeV. These results are qualitatively compatible with values suggested from experiments. This success is remarkable and encouraging because we are trying to reveal nature of baryon-baryon interactions starting from QCD, and this agreement proves that our approach is essentially correct.

We have presented a strategy to study nuclei and nuclear matters from first principles, namely, from QCD. We first compute nucleon-nucleon potentials numerically in lattice QCD, and then use them to investigate properties of nuclei and nuclear matter by various methods developed in nuclear physics. As a demonstration that this strategy works, mass and structure of ^4^He, ^16^O and ^40^Ca, and equation of state of nuclear matters are determined with the lattice QCD induced two-nucleon potentials in a heavy quark region as an input. We have found that these nuclei and the symmetric nuclear matter are bound at one quark mass corresponding to the pseudo-scalar meson (pion) mass of 469 MeV (the octet baryon (nucleon) mass of 1161 MeV). The obtained binding energy per nucleon has a uniform mass-number A dependence which is consistent to the Bethe-Weizsacker mass formula qualitatively. The present study demonstrates that our strategy works well to investigate various properties of atomic nuclei and nuclear matter starting from QCD, without depending on models or experimental information about the nuclear force.

Background: Measurements of forward exclusive meson production at different squared four-momenta of the exchanged virtual photon, $Q^2$, and at different four-momentum transfer, t, can be used to probe QCD's transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom at long distances to quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short scales. Ratios of separated response functions in $π^-$ and $π^+$ electroproduction are particularly informative. The ratio for transverse photons may allow this transition to be more easily observed, while the ratio for longitudinal photons provides a crucial verification of the assumed pole dominance, needed for reliable extraction of the pion form factor from electroproduction data. Method: Data were acquired with 2.6-5.2 GeV electron beams and the HMS+SOS spectrometers in Jefferson Lab Hall C, at central $Q^2$ values of 0.6, 1.0, 1.6 GeV$^2$ at W=1.95 GeV, and $Q^2$=2.45 GeV$^2$ at W=2.22 GeV. There was significant coverage in $φ$ and $ε$, which allowed separation of $σ_{L,T,LT,TT}$. Results: $σ_L$ shows a clear signature of the pion pole, with a sharp rise at small -t. In contrast, $σ_T$ is much flatter versus t. The longitudinal/transverse ratios evolve with $Q^2$ and t, and at the highest $Q^2$=2.45 GeV$^2$ show a slight enhancement for $π^-$ production compared to $π^+$. The $π^-/π^+$ ratio for transverse photons exhibits only a small $Q^2$-dependence, following a nearly universal curve with t, with a steep transition to a value of about 0.25, consistent with s-channel quark knockout. The $σ_{TT}/σ_T$ ratio also drops rapidly with $Q^2$, qualitatively consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The $π^-/π^+$ ratio for longitudinal photons indicates a small isoscalar contamination at W=1.95 GeV, consistent with what was observed in our earlier determination of the pion form factor at these kinematics.

Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are considered calibrated probes for the strongly interacting deconfined medium (Quark Gluon Plasma, QGP) formed in heavy-ion collisions. Produced in hard scattering processes in the initial stages of the collision, they interact with the medium, lose energy and, depending on the coupling strength to the medium, take part in the collective motion of the QCD matter. ALICE measured the production of ${\rm D^{0}}$, ${\rm D^{*+}}$, ${\rm D^{+}}$ and ${\rm D_{s}}$ mesons at central rapidity in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. The study of the modification of the transverse momentum differential yields of charm particles in Pb-Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions, quantified by the nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$), can unravel details of the energy loss mechanism, such as its dependence on the quark mass and on the path length the parton travels through the medium. A similar comparison between pp and p-Pb collision data ($R_{\rm pPb}$) is fundamental to disentangle effects related to the presence of the hot medium from cold nuclear matter effects. The degree of thermalization and coupling to the medium is investigated in semi-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions by measuring the elliptic flow coefficient ($v_{2}$) at low pt. At high pt, $v_{2}$ is sensitive to the path-length dependence of the energy loss. Results on the transverse momentum and centrality dependence of the D-meson elliptic flow and $R_{AA}$ will be presented. The comparison with the $R_{\rm AA}$ of non-prompt ${\rm J/}ψ$ from B-meson decays measured with CMS will be discussed. The preliminary results on D-meson $R_{\rm pPb}$ and the dependence of D-meson yields on rapidity in p-Pb collisions will be shown. As an outlook, the analysis and the preliminary results on the azimuthal correlations of D mesons and charged hadrons in pp collisions will be described.

We utilize the Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave function to determine two-nucleon forces (2NF) and 3NF in the same framework. As a first exploratory study, we extract 3NF in which three nucleons are aligned linearly with an equal spacing. This is the simplest geometrical configuration which reduces the huge computational cost of calculating the NBS wave function. Quantum numbers of the three-nucleon system are chosen to be (I, J^P)=(1/2,1/2^+) (the triton channel). Lattice QCD simulations are performed using N_f=2 dynamical clover fermion configurations at the lattice spacing of a = 0.156 fm on a 16^3 x 32 lattice with a large quark mass corresponding to m_π= 1.13 GeV. We find repulsive 3NF at short distance in the triton channel. Several sources of systematic errors are also discussed.

The eta peak for meson energies greater than 50 GeV (Feynman x_F >0.5) was observed in the STAR Forward Pion Detectors, along with pi0 mesons, at pseudo-rapidity of 3.65 in sqrt{s}=200 GeV pp collisions. The pi0 transverse asymmetry, which has already been reported in detail by the STAR collaboration, is compared to the transverse asymmetry in the eta mass region. The surprising observation is that in this kinematic region, the eta asymmetry is larger than the already large pi0 asymmetry.

We also report on the $φ$ meson measured simultaneously both in the $K^+K^-$ and in the dilepton decay channel for the first time in high energy heavy-ion collisions. An excellent agreement is found between the rapidity densities and the shape of the measured tranverse momentum spectrum. While the $K^0$ data agree with previously reported $K^+$ measurements, the $Λ$ distributions show a different behavior relative to that of protons. The strangeness balance and the production yield per participating nucleon as a function of the centrality of the reaction are discussed, for the first time at SIS energies.

For the integral flow, we discuss the interplay between collective expansion and spectator shadowing for three centrality classes. A complete excitation function of transverse momentum dependence of elliptic flow is presented for the first time in this energy range, revealing a rapid change with incident energy below 0.4 AGeV, followed by an almost perfect scaling at the higher energies. The equation of state of compressed nuclear matter is addressed through comparisons to microscopic transport model calculations.

Four different combinations of $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr nuclei, both as projectile and target, were investigated at the same bombarding energy of 400$A$ MeV using a $4 π$ detector. The degree of isospin mixing between projectile and target nucleons is mapped across a large portion of the phase space using two different isospin-tracer observables, the number of measured protons and the ${\rm t}/^{3}{\rm He}$ yield ratio. The experimental results show that the global equilibrium is not reached even in the most central collisions. Quantitative measures of stopping and mixing are extracted from the data. They are found to exhibit a quite strong sensitivity to the in-medium (n,n) cross section used in microscopic transport calculations.

Small-angle correlations of pairs of nonidentical light charged particles produced in central collisions of heavy ions in the A=100 mass region at a beam energy of 400 AMeV are investigated with the FOPI detector system at GSI Darmstadt. The difference of longitudinal correlation functions with the relative velocity parallel and anti-parallel to the center-of-mass velocity of the pair in the central source frame is studied. This method allows extracting the apparent space-time differences of the emission of the charged particles. Comparing the correlations with results of a final-state interaction model delivers quantitative estimates of these asymmetries. Time delays as short as 1 fm/c or - alternatively - source radius differences of a few tenth fm are resolved. The strong collective expansion of the participant zone introduces not only an apparent reduction of the source radius but also a modification of the emission times. After correcting for both effects a complete sequence of space-time emission points of p, d, t, 3He, alpha particles is presented for the first time.

Directed sideward flow of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments was measured in different symmetric reactions at bombarding energies from 90 to 800 AMeV. The flow parameter is found to increase with the charge of the detected fragment up to Z = 3-4 and then turns into saturation for heavier fragments. Guided by simple simulations of an anisotropic expanding thermal source, we show that the value at saturation can provide a good estimate of the flow angle, $Θ_{flow}$, in the participant region. It is found that $Θ_{flow}$ depends strongly on the impact parameter. The excitation function of $Θ_{flow}$ reveals striking deviations from the ideal hydrodynamical scaling. The data exhibit a steep rise of $Θ_{\flow}$ to a maximum at around 250-400 AMeV, followed by a moderate decrease as the bombarding energy increases further.

Measurements of yields of these rarely produced isotopes near midrapidity will help constrain the production levels of strangelets via coalescence. E864 also measures antiproton production which includes decays from antihyperons. Comparisons with antiproton yields measured by E878 as a function of centrality indicate a large antihyperon-to-antiproton ratio in central collisions.

The mass distributions of baryon resonances populated in near-central collisions of Au on Au and Ni on Ni are deduced by defolding the $p_t$ spectra of charged pions by a method which does not depend on a specific resonance shape. In addition the mass distributions of resonances are obtained from the invariant masses of $(p, π^{\pm})$ pairs. With both methods the deduced mass distributions are shifted by an average value of -60 MeV/c$^2$ relative to the mass distribution of the free $Δ(1232)$ resonance, the distributions descent almost exponentially towards mass values of 2000 MeV/c^2. The observed differences between $(p, π^-)$ and $(p, π^+)$ pairs indicate a contribution of isospin $I = 1/2$ resonances. The attempt to consistently describe the deduced mass distributions and the reconstructed kinetic energy spectra of the resonances leads to new insights about the freeze out conditions, i.e. to rather low temperatures and large expansion velocities.

Azimuthal distributions of charged particles and intermediate mass fragments emitted in Au+Au collisions at 600AMeV have been measured using the FOPI facility at GSI-Darmstadt. Data show a strong increase of the in-plane azimuthal anisotropy ratio with the charge of the detected fragment. Intermediate mass fragments are found to exhibit a strong momentum-space alignment with respect of the reaction plane. The experimental results are presented as a function of the polar center-of-mass angle and over a broad range of impact parameters. They are compared to the predictions of the Isospin Quantum Molecular Dynamics model using three different parametrisations of the equation of state. We show that such highly accurate data provide stringent test for microscopic transport models and can potentially constrain separately the stiffness of the nuclear equation of state and the momentum dependence of the nuclear interaction.

Measurements of parity-violating longitudinal analyzing powers (normalized asymmetries) in polarized proton-proton scattering provide a unique window on the interplay between the weak and strong interactions between and within hadrons. Several new proton-proton parity violation experiments are presently either being performed or are being prepared for execution in the near future: at TRIUMF at 221 MeV and 450 MeV and at COSY (Kernforschungsanlage Juelich) at 230 MeV and near 1.3 GeV. These experiments are intended to provide stringent constraints on the set of six effective weak meson-nucleon coupling constants, which characterize the weak interaction between hadrons in the energy domain where meson exchange models provide an appropriate description. The 221 MeV is unique in that it selects a single transition amplitude (3P2-1D2) and consequently constrains the weak meson-nucleon coupling constant h_rho{pp}. The TRIUMF 221 MeV proton-proton parity violation experiment is described in some detail. A preliminary result for the longitudinal analyzing power is Az = (1.1 +/-0.4 +/-0.4) x 10^-7. Further proton-proton parity violation experiments are commented on. The anomaly at 6 GeV/c requires that a new multi-GeV proton-proton parity violation experiment be performed.

Using the FOPI detector at GSI Darmstadt, excitation functions of collective flow components were measured for the Au+Au system, in the reaction plane and out of this plane, at seven incident energies ranging from 100AMeV to 800AMeV. The threshold energies, corresponding to the onset of sideward-flow (balance energy) and squeeze-out effect (transition energy), are extracted from extrapolations of these excitation functions toward lower beam energies for charged products with Z>2. The transition energy is found to be larger than the balance energy. The impact parameter dependence of both balance and transition energies, when extrapolated to central collisions, suggests comparable although slightly higher values than the threshold energy for the radial flow. The relevant parameter seems to be the energy deposited into the system in order to overcome the attractive nuclear forces.

Charged pions from Ni + Ni reactions at 1.05, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are measured with the FOPI detector. The mean $π^{\pm}$ multiplicities per mean number of participants increase with beam energy, in accordance with earlier studies of the Ar + KCl and La + La systems. The pion kinetic energy spectra have concave shape and are fitted by the superposition of two Boltzmann distributions with different temperatures. These apparent temperatures depend only weakly on bombarding energy. The pion angular distributions show a forward/backward enhancement at all energies, but not the $Θ= 90^0$ enhancement which was observed in case of the Au + Au system. These features also determine the rapidity distributions which are therefore in disagreement with the hypothesis of one thermal source. The importance of the Coulomb interaction and of the pion rescattering by spectator matter in producing these phenomena is discussed.
