We highlight topical issues in hyperon spectroscopy that will be accessible when a secondary beam of neutral kaons is created in Hall D at Jefferson Lab as proposed to the JLab Program Advisory Committee. We point out which physical questions need to be answered and suggest a number of novel experiments. In particular we suggest to measure the presently disputed SU(3) structure of the $Λ(1405)$, to search for Pentaquarks mit exotic quantum numbers and to search for baryons belonging to the SU(6) 20-plet representation.

New data on pion-photoproduction off the proton have been included in the partial wave analyses Bonn-Gatchina and SAID and in the dynamical coupled-channel approach Jülich-Bonn. All reproduce the recent new data well: the double polarization data for E, G, H, P and T in $γp \to π^0 p$ from ELSA, the beam asymmetry $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ and $π^+ n$ from Jefferson Laboratory, and the precise new differential cross section and beam asymmetry data $Σ$ for $γp \to π^0 p$ from MAMI. The new fit results for the multipoles are compared with predictions not taking into account the new data. The mutual agreement is improved considerably but still far from being perfect.

Evidence for $Δ(2200)7/2^-$ from photoproduction and consequence for chiral-symmetry restoration at high mass

We report a partial-wave analysis of new data on the double-polarization variable $E$ for the reactions $γp\to π^+ n$ and $γp\to π^0 p$ and of further data published earlier. We report a partial-wave analysis of new data on the double-polarization variable $E$ for the reactions $γp\to π^+ n$ and $γp\to π^0 p$ and of further data published earlier. The analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) formalism reveals evidence for a poorly known baryon resonance, the one-star $Δ(2200)7/2^-$. This is the lowest-mass $Δ^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^-$. Its mass is significantly higher than the mass of its parity partner $Δ(1950)7/2^+$ which is the lowest-mass $Δ^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^+$. It has been suggested that chiral symmetry might be restored in the high-mass region of hadron excitations, and that these two resonances should be degenerate in mass. Our findings are in conflict with this prediction.

Using all recent data on the differential cross sections and spin observables for the reaction $γp \to K^+ Λ$, an energy-independent partial-wave analysis is performed. The analysis requires multipoles up to $L = 2$; there is no evidence that the fit requires multipoles with $L=3$. At present the available data allow us to extract the dominant multipoles only. Ambiguities of the signs of $N\to ΣK$ coupling constants are studied in a multichannel partial wave analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions. It is shown that the signs are not free from some ambiguities, and further experimental data are needed. Pion and photo-induced inelastic reactions off protons are studied in a multichannel partial-wave analysis. Properties of nucleon and $Δ$ resonances are derived and compared to previous analyses. Amplitudes are shown for transitions to $Nη$, $ΛK$, and $ΣK$ final states.

A fit using known broad resonances and only standard background amplitudes can not describe the relatively narrow peaking structure in the cross section in the mass region of 1660-1750 MeV which follows a minimum. Results of a partial wave analysis of new high-statistics data on $γp\to pη$ from MAMI are presented. A fit using known broad resonances and only standard background amplitudes can not describe the relatively narrow peaking structure in the cross section in the mass region of 1660-1750 MeV which follows a minimum. An improved description of the data can be reached by either assuming the existence of a narrow resonance at a mass of about 1700 MeV with small photo-coupling or by a threshold effect. In the latter case the observed structure is explained by a strong (resonant or non-resonant) $γp\toωp$ coupling in the $S_{11}$ partial wave. When the beam asymmetry data, published by part of the GRAAL collaboration, are included in the fit, the solution with a narrow $P_{11}$ state is slightly preferred. In that fit, mass and width of the hypothetical resonance are determined to $M\sim$1694 MeV and $Γ\sim 40$ MeV, respectively, and the photo-coupling to $\sqrt{{\rm Br}_{ηN}} A_{1/2}^p \sim 2.6\cdot 10^{-3}$ GeV$^{-1/2}$. High precision measurements of the target asymmetry and $F$-observable are mandatory to establish the possible existence of such a narrow state and to provide the necessary information to define which partial wave is responsible for the structure observed in the data.

The photo production of $ω$ mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb and Pb has been measured using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The dependence of the $ω$ meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic $ω$ width is found to be $130-150 \rm{MeV/c^2}$ at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the $ω$ meson, this inelastic $ω$ width corresponds to a reduction of the $ω$ lifetime by a factor $\approx 30$. For the first time, the momentum dependent $ω$N cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb.

The cross section is lower and varies less with photon energy and kaon production angle than that of gamma p --> K+ Sigma0. The Sigma+ is polarized predominantly at cos(Theta_K^{c.m.}) \approx 0. The data presented here are more precise than previous ones obtained with SAPHIR and extend the photon energy range to higher values. They are compared to isobar model calculations.
