Measurement of Compton scattering at MAMI for the extraction of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton

Abstract: A precise measurement of the differential cross-sections $dσしぐま/dΩおめが$ and the linearly polarized photon beam asymmetry $Σしぐま_3$ for Compton scattering on the proton below pion threshold has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4πぱい$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The incident photons were produced by the recently upgraded Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility and impinged on a cryogenic li… ▽ More A precise measurement of the differential cross-sections $dσしぐま/dΩおめが$ and the linearly polarized photon beam asymmetry $Σしぐま_3$ for Compton scattering on the proton below pion threshold has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost $4πぱい$ detector at the Mainz Microtron. The incident photons were produced by the recently upgraded Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility and impinged on a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target, with the scattered photons detected in the Crystal Ball/TAPS set-up. Using the highest statistics Compton scattering data ever measured on the proton along with two effective field theories (both covariant baryon and heavy-baryon) and one fixed-$t$ dispersion relation model, constraining the fits with the Baldin sum rule, we have obtained the proton electric and magnetic polarizabilities with unprecedented precision: \begin{align*} &{}αあるふぁ_{E1} = 10.99 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.34 &{}βべーた_{M1} = 3.14 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.35 \end{align*} in units of $10^{-4}$\,fm$^3$ where the errors are statistical, systematic, spin polarizability dependent and model dependent. △ Less

Physics Opportunities with Meson Beams for EIC

Abstract: Over the past two decades, meson photo- and electroproduction data of unprecedented quality and quantity have been measured at electromagnetic facilities worldwide. By contrast, the meson-beam data for the same hadronic final states are mostly outdated and largely of poor quality, or even non-existent, and thus provide inadequate input to help interpret, analyze, and exploit the full potential of… ▽ More Over the past two decades, meson photo- and electroproduction data of unprecedented quality and quantity have been measured at electromagnetic facilities worldwide. By contrast, the meson-beam data for the same hadronic final states are mostly outdated and largely of poor quality, or even non-existent, and thus provide inadequate input to help interpret, analyze, and exploit the full potential of the new electromagnetic data. To reap the full benefit of the high-precision electromagnetic data, new high-statistics data from measurements with meson beams, with good angle and energy coverage for a wide range of reactions, are critically needed to advance our knowledge in baryon and meson spectroscopy and other related areas of hadron physics. To address this situation, a state-of-the-art meson-beam facility needs to be constructed. Single $πぱい^0$ Production Off Neutrons Bound in Deuteron with Linearly Polarized Photons

Abstract: The quasifree $\overrightarrowγがんま d\toπぱい^0n(p)$ photon beam asymmetry, $Σしぐま$, has been measured at photon energies, $E_γがんま$, from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49 to 148$^\circ$.… ▽ More The quasifree $\overrightarrowγがんま d\toπぱい^0n(p)$ photon beam asymmetry, $Σしぐま$, has been measured at photon energies, $E_γがんま$, from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID, and Bonn-Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new $Σしぐま$ measurements, has also been performed. Our data are in reasonable agreement with previous A2 measurements and extend them to lower energies. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial-wave analyses and to the latest SAID fit MA19 that included our data. Partial-Wave Analysis of $γがんまp \rightarrow K^+ Λらむだ$ using a multichannel framework

Abstract: Results from a partial-wave analysis of the reaction $γがんまp \rightarrow K^+ Λらむだ$ are presented. The reaction is dominated by the $S_{11}(1650)$ and $P_{13}(1720)$ resonances at low energies and by $P_{13}(1900)$ at higher energies. There are small contributions from all amplitudes up to and including $G_{17}$, with $F_{17}$ necessary for obtaining a good fit of several of the spin observables. Coupled-Channel Model for $\bar{K}N$ Scattering in the Resonant Region

Abstract: We present a unitary multichannel model for $\bar{K}N$ scattering in the resonance region that fulfills unitarity. It has the correct analytical properties for the amplitudes once they are extended to the complex-$s$ plane and the partial waves have the right threshold behavior. To determine the parameters of the model, we have fitted single-energy partial waves up to $J=7/2$ and up to 2.15 GeV of… ▽ More We present a unitary multichannel model for $\bar{K}N$ scattering in the resonance region that fulfills unitarity. Quasifree photoproduction of $ηいーた$ mesons off protons and neutrons

Abstract: Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions $γがんまp\rightarrowηいーたp$ and $γがんまn\rightarrowηいーたn$ have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes $ηいーた\rightarrow 2γがんま$ and… ▽ More Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions $γがんまp\rightarrowηいーたp$ and $γがんまn\rightarrowηいーたn$ have been determined at the MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral decay modes $ηいーた\rightarrow 2γがんま$ and $ηいーた\rightarrow 3πぱい^0 \rightarrow 6γがんま$ and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combined setup of the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters. The $ηいーた$-production cross sections were measured in coincidence with recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and in an inclusive mode without a condition on recoil nucleons, which allowed a check of the internal consistency of the data. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the final-state invariant mass and possible nuclear effects on the quasifree cross section were investigated by a comparison of free and quasifree proton data. The results, which represent a significant improvement in statistical quality compared to previous measurements, agree with the known neutron-to-proton cross-section ratio in the peak of the $S_{11}(1535)$ resonance and confirm a peak in the neutron cross section, which is absent for the proton, at a center-of-mass energy $W = (1670\pm 5)$ MeV with an intrinsic width of $Γがんま\approx 30$ MeV. △ Less

Neutron skin of $^{208}$Pb from Coherent Pion Photoproduction

Abstract: Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on $^{208}$Pb has been extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution ar… ▽ More Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on $^{208}$Pb has been extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitation of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be 6.70$\pm 0.03(stat)$ fm and 0.55$\pm 0.01(stat)$$^{+0.02}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness $Δでるたr_{np}$=0.15$\pm 0.03(stat)$$^{+0.01}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm. The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of $^{208}$Pb has a halo character. The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of nuclei and the equation of state for neutron-rich matter. △ Less

Partial-wave analysis of $\bar K N$ scattering reactions

Abstract: We investigate the two-body reactions $\bar K N\rightarrow \bar K N$, $\bar K N\rightarrow πぱいΛらむだ$, and $\bar K N\rightarrow πぱいΣしぐま$ via single-energy partial-wave analyses in the c.m.\ energy range 1480 to 2100 MeV. The partial-wave amplitudes for these reactions thus extracted were constrained by a multichannel energy-dependent model satisfying unitarity of the partial-wave $S$-matrix. We obtain excelle… ▽ More We investigate the two-body reactions $\bar K N\rightarrow \bar K N$, $\bar K N\rightarrow πぱいΛらむだ$, and $\bar K N\rightarrow πぱいΣしぐま$ via single-energy partial-wave analyses in the c.m.\ energy range 1480 to 2100 MeV. The partial-wave amplitudes for these reactions thus extracted were constrained by a multichannel energy-dependent model satisfying unitarity of the partial-wave $S$-matrix. We obtain excellent predictions of differential cross sections, polarizations, polarized cross sections, and cross sections for these reactions from a global energy-dependent solution. △ Less

Abstract: The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation… ▽ More The gp-->etap reaction has been measured with the Crystal Ball and TAPS multiphoton spectrometers in the energy range from the production threshold of 707 MeV to 1.4 GeV (1.49 =< W >= 1.87 GeV). Bremsstrahlung photons produced by the 1.5-GeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C and momentum analyzed by the Glasgow Tagging Spectrometer were used for the eta-meson production. Our accumulation of 3.8 x 10^6 gp-->etap-->3pi0p-->6gp events allows a detailed study of the reaction dynamics. The gp-->etap differential cross sections were determined for 120 energy bins and the full range of the production angles. Our data show a dip near W = 1680 MeV in the total cross section caused by a substantial dip in eta production at forward angles. The data are compared to predictions of previous SAID and MAID partial-wave analyses and to thelatest SAID and MAID fits that have included our data. △ Less

Abstract: We consider the effect of exotic S=+1 resonances Theta+ and Theta++ on K+p elastic scattering data (total cross section) and the process K0_Lp-->K0_Sp. Data near the observed Theta+(1540) are examined for evidence of additional states. The width limit for a Theta++ state is reconsidered and shown to be much less than 1 MeV. We consider the effect of exotic S=+1 resonances Theta+ and Theta++ on K+p elastic scattering data (total cross section) and the process K0_Lp-->K0_Sp. 12C(p,n)12N reaction at 135 MeV

Abstract: We report observations from the (p,n) reaction on 12C at 135 MeV. The experiment was performed with the beam-swinger neutron time-of-flight system at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. Neutrons were detected in large-volume plastic scintillation detectors located in three detector stations at 0 deg, 24 deg, and 45 deg with respect to the undeflected beam line; the flight paths were 91 m,… ▽ More We report observations from the (p,n) reaction on 12C at 135 MeV. The experiment was performed with the beam-swinger neutron time-of-flight system at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. Neutrons were detected in large-volume plastic scintillation detectors located in three detector stations at 0 deg, 24 deg, and 45 deg with respect to the undeflected beam line; the flight paths were 91 m, 91 m, and 74 m, respectively. Overall time resolutions of about 825 ps provided energy resolutions of about 350 keV in the first two stations and about 425 keV in the third station. The angular distributions for states with excitation energies up to 10 MeV are presented and comparisons are made with DWIA calculations that use one-body density matrices from 0hw and 1hw shell-model calculations. New information is deduced on the excitation energies, widths and spin-parity assignments for several energy levels of 12N. △ Less
