We study electromagnetic form factors of protons in proton-nucleus scattering via analysing of experimental cross-sections of accompanying bremsstrahlung photons. A new bremsstrahlung model for proton-nucleus scattering is developed, where a main focus is given on incoherent bremsstrahlung that has not been considered previously. In analysis we choose experimental bremsstrahlung data of $p$ + $^{197}$Au scattering at proton beam energy of 190 MeV obtained by TAPS collaboration. We find the following. (1) Inclusion of incoherent emission to calculations improves agreements with experimental data essentially, contribution of incoherent bremsstrahlung is essentially larger than coherent one. (2) Inclusion of form factors of the scattered proton improves agreement with experimental data in comparison with calculations with coherent and incoherent contributions without form factors. (3) Sensitivity of model in study of form factors of the scattered proton is high. This demonstrates a new opportunity to study internal structure of protons under influence of nuclear forces in nuclear scattering.

Relativistic corrections have been made in the non-relativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) simulations to apply to the high energy neutron production in the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C collisions at incident energies of 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The corrections are made in kinematics alone and no nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings nor meson productions are taken into account, and AMD with the relativistic corrections is called semi-relativistic AMD. The three-nucleon collision (3NC) and Fermi boost in the collision processes are taken into account in the non-relativistic AMD. Since the relativistic corrections tend to compensate in each other, the difference between the semi-relativistic and non-relativistic results become small. High energy tails of the available experimental neutron double differential cross sections, especially at larger angles, are well reproduced by AMD with the 3NC term both with non-relativistic and semi-relativistic simulations. These results indicate that the high energy neutrons are dominantly produced by the 3NC process in this incident energy range.

No significant $H$-dibaryon signal is observed in the $Ξ^-p$ final state. This is the first study of hyperon-nucleon interactions in electron-positron collisions and opens up a new direction for such research.

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of $J/ψ$ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=200~\rm GeV$ in d$+$Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer $-t$ is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going Zero-Degree Calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the Color Glass Condensate saturation model and the gluon shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is predicted to occur as a consequence of a local violation of $\cal P$ and $\cal CP$ symmetries of the strong interaction amidst a strong electro-magnetic field generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Experimental manifestation of the CME involves a separation of positively and negatively charged hadrons along the direction of the magnetic field. Previous measurements of the CME-sensitive charge-separation observables remain inconclusive because of large background contributions. In order to better control the influence of signal and backgrounds, the STAR Collaboration performed a blind analysis of a large data sample of approximately 3.8 billion isobar collisions of $^{96}_{44}$Ru+$^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr+$^{96}_{40}$Zr at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV. Prior to the blind analysis, the CME signatures are predefined as a significant excess of the CME-sensitive observables in Ru+Ru collisions over those in Zr+Zr collisions, owing to a larger magnetic field in the former. A precision down to 0.4% is achieved, as anticipated, in the relative magnitudes of the pertinent observables between the two isobar systems. Observed differences in the multiplicity and flow harmonics at the matching centrality indicate that the magnitude of the CME background is different between the two species. No CME signature that satisfies the predefined criteria has been observed in isobar collisions in this blind analysis.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

In this range the ratio, $C_{6}/C_{2}$, of net-baryon distributions are predicted to be negative. In this paper, we report the first measurement of the midrapidity net-proton $C_{6}/C_{2}$ from 27, 54.4 and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The dependence on collision centrality and kinematic acceptance in ($p_{T}$, $y$) are analyzed. While for 27 and 54.4 GeV collisions the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ values are close to zero within uncertainties, it is observed that for 200 GeV collisions, the $C_{6}/C_{2}$ ratio becomes progressively negative from peripheral to central collisions. Transport model calculations without critical dynamics predict mostly positive values except for the most central collisions within uncertainties. These observations seem to favor a smooth crossover in the high energy nuclear collisions at top RHIC energy.

In this work, we self-consistently explore the possibility of charged pion superfluidity and cosmic trajectories in early Universe under the framework of Polyakov-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. By taking the badly constrained lepton flavor asymmetries $l_{\rm e}$ and $l_μ$ as free parameters, the upper boundaries of pion superfluidity phase are consistently found to be around the pseudocritical temperature at zero chemical potentials. So the results greatly support the choice of $T=0.16~{\rm GeV}$ as the upper boundary of pion superfluidity in the previous lattice QCD study. Take $l_{\rm e}+l_μ=-0.2$ as an example, we demonstrate the features of pion condensation and the associated cosmic trajectories with the evolution of early Universe. While the trajectory of electric chemical potential reacts strongly at both the lower and upper boundaries of reentrant pion superfluidity, the trajectories of other chemical potentials only respond strongly at the upper boundary.

As is widely-known, the eigen-functions of the Landau problem in the symmetric gauge are specified by two quantum numbers. The first is the familiar Landau quantum number $n$, whereas the second is the magnetic quantum number $m$, which is the eigen-value of the canonical orbital angular momentum (OAM) operator of the electron. The eigen-energies of the system depend only on the first quantum number $n$, and the second quantum number $m$ does not correspond to any direct observables. This seems natural since the canonical OAM is generally believed to be a {\it gauge-variant} quantity, and observation of a gauge-variant quantity would contradict a fundamental principle of physics called the {\it gauge principle}. In recent researches, however, Bliohk et al. analyzed the motion of helical electron beam along the direction of a uniform magnetic field, which was mostly neglected in past analyses of the Landau states. Their analyses revealed highly non-trivial $m$-dependent rotational dynamics of the Landau electron, but the problem is that their papers give an impression that the quantum number $m$ in the Landau eigen-states corresponds to a genuine observable. This compatibility problem between the gauge principle and the observability of the quantum number $m$ in the Landau eigen-states was attacked in our previous letter paper. In the present paper, we try to give more convincing answer to this delicate problem of physics, especially by paying attention not only to the {\it particle-like} aspect but also to the {\it wave-like} aspect of the Landau electron.

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC.
The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies.
This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

The $C_{n}$ and $κ_n$ are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, $y$, and transverse momentum, $p_{T}$. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010 -- 2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4 $<$ $p_{\rm T}$ $<$ 2.0 GeV/$c$, using the STAR detector at RHIC. We observe a non-monotonic energy dependence ($\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 7.7 -- 62.4 GeV) of the net-proton $C_{4}$/$C_{2}$ with the significance of 3.1$σ$ for the 0-5\% central Au+Au collisions. This is consistent with the expectations of critical fluctuations in a QCD-inspired model. Thermal and transport model calculations show a monotonic variation with $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$. For the multiparticle correlation functions, we observe significant negative values for a two-particle correlation function, $κ_2$, of protons and antiprotons, which are mainly due to the effects of baryon number conservation. Furthermore, it is found that the four-particle correlation function, $κ_4$, of protons plays a role in determining the energy dependence of proton $C_4/C_1$ below 19.6 GeV, which cannot be understood by the effect of baryon number conservation.

Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce local chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics, which can lead to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) -- an electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The CME-sensitive azimuthal correlator observable ($Δγ$) is contaminated by background arising, in part, from resonance decays coupled with elliptic anisotropy ($v_{2}$). We report here differential measurements of the correlator as a function of the pair invariant mass ($m_{\rm inv}$) in 20-50\% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}$= 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. Strong resonance background contributions to $Δγ$ are observed. At large $m_{\rm inv}$ where this background is significantly reduced, the $Δγ$ value is found to be significantly smaller. An event-shape-engineering technique is deployed to determine the $v_{2}$ background shape as a function of $m_{\rm inv}$. We extract a $v_2$-independent and $m_{\rm inv}$-averaged signal $Δγ_{\rm sig}$ = (0.03 $\pm$ 0.06 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times10^{-4}$, or $(2\pm4\pm5)\%$ of the inclusive $Δγ(m_{\rm inv}>0.4$ GeV/$c^2$)$ =(1.58 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.02) \times10^{-4}$, within pion $p_{T}$ = 0.2 - 0.8~\gevc and averaged over pseudorapidity ranges of $-1 < η< -0.05$ and $0.05 < η< 1$. This represents an upper limit of $0.23\times10^{-4}$, or $15\%$ of the inclusive result, at $95\%$ confidence level for the $m_{\rm inv}$-integrated CME contribution.

The measurements of particle multiplicity distributions have generated considerable interest in understanding the fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers in the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) hadronization regime, in particular near a possible critical point and near the chemical freeze-out. We report the measurement of efficiency and centrality bin width corrected cumulant ratios ($C_{2}/C_{1}$, $C_{3}/C_{2}$) of net-$Λ$ distributions, in the context of both strangeness and baryon number conservation, as a function of collision energy, centrality and rapidity. The results are for Au + Au collisions at five beam energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV) recorded with the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR). We compare our results to the Poisson and negative binomial (NBD) expectations, as well as to Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model predictions. Both NBD and Poisson baselines agree with data within the statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ratios of the measured cumulants show no features of critical fluctuations. The chemical freeze-out temperatures extracted from a recent HRG calculation, which was successfully used to describe the net-proton, net-kaon and net-charge data, indicate $Λ$ freeze-out conditions similar to those of kaons. However, large deviations are found when comparing to temperatures obtained from net-proton fluctuations. The net-$Λ$ cumulants show a weak, but finite, dependence on the rapidity coverage in the acceptance of the detector, which can be attributed to quantum number conservation.

Non-monotonic variation with collision energy ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$) of the moments of the net-baryon number distribution in heavy-ion collisions, related to the correlation length and the susceptibilities of the system, is suggested as a signature for the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) critical point. We report the first evidence of a non-monotonic variation in kurtosis times variance of the net-proton number (proxy for net-baryon number) distribution as a function of \rootsnn with 3.1$σ$ significance, for head-on (central) gold-on-gold (Au+Au) collisions measured using the STAR detector at RHIC. Data in non-central Au+Au collisions and models of heavy-ion collisions without a critical point show a monotonic variation as a function of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$.

Recent studies have theoretically investigated the atomic excitation and ionization induced by the dark matter (DM)-nucleus scattering, and it is found that the suddenly recoiled atom is much more likely to excite or lose its electrons than expected. Such phenomenon is called the "Migdal effect". In this paper, we extend the established strategy to describe the Migdal effect in isolated atoms to the case in semiconductors under the framework of tight-binding (TB) approximation. Since the localized aspects of electrons are respected in form of the Wannier functions (WFs), the extension of the existing Migdal approach for isolated atoms is much more natural, while the extensive nature of electrons in solids is reflected in the hopping integrals. We take diamond target as a concrete proof of principle for the methodology, and calculate relevant energy spectra and projected sensitivity of such diamond detector. It turns out that our method as a preliminary attempt is practically effective.

According to Bliokh et al., allowing free propagation along the direction of a uniform magnetic field, the familiar Landau electron state can be regarded as a non-diffracting version of the helical electron beam propagating along the magnetic field. Based on this observation, they argued that, while propagating along the magnetic field, the Landau electrons receive characteristic rotation with three different angular velocities, depending on the eigen-value $m$ of the canonical OAM operator, which is generally gauge-variant, and this splitting was in fact experimentally confirmed. Through complete analyses of highly mysterious $m$-dependent rotational dynamics of the quantum Landau states, we try to make clear how and why their observation does not contradict the widely-believed gauge principle.

We investigate emission of bremsstrahlung photons during scattering of $α$-particles off nuclei. For that, we construct bremsstrahlung model for $α$-nucleus scattering, where a new formalism for coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions in elastic scattering and mechanisms in inelastic scattering is added. Basing of this approach, we analyze experimental bremsstrahlung cross-sections in the scattering of $α$-particles off the \isotope[59]{Co}, \isotope[116]{Sn}, \isotope[\rm nat]{Ag} and \isotope[197]{Au} nuclei at 50 MeV of $α$-particles beam measured at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Calcutta. We observe oscillations in the calculated spectra for elastic scattering for each nucleus. But, for \isotope[59]{Co}, \isotope[116]{Sn} and \isotope[\rm nat]{Ag} we obtain good agreement between calculated coherent spectrum with incoherent contribution for elastic scattering with experimental data in the full photon energy region. For heavy nucleus \isotope[197]{Au} we find that (1) Oscillating behavior of the calculated spectrum of coherent emission in elastic scattering is in disagreement with experimental data, (2) Inclusion of incoherent emission improves description of the data, but summarized spectrum is in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. To understand unknown modification of wave function for scattering, we add new mechanisms of inelastic scattering to calculations and extract information about unknown new amplitude of such mechanisms from experimental data analysis. This amplitude has maxima at some energies, that characterizes existence of states of the most compact structures (clusters) in nucleus-target. We explain origin of oscillations in the bremsstrahlung spectra for elastic scattering (at first time). New information about coherent and incoherent contributions is extracted for studied reactions.

The determined isomeric excitation energy continues a smooth trend of odd-$A$ indium isotopes up to the immediate vicinity of $N=50$ magic number. This trend can be confirmed by dedicated shell model calculations only if the neutron configuration mixing is considered. We find that the single particle energies are different for different states of the same isotope. The presented configuration-dependent shell evolution, type II shell evolution, in odd-$A$ nuclei is discussed for the first time. Our results will facilitate future studies of single-particle neutron states.

The absolute value of $D^0$-meson $dv_1/dy$ is about 25 times larger than that for charged kaons, with 3.4$σ$ significance. These data give a unique insight into the initial tilt of the produced matter, and offer constraints on the geometric and transport parameters of the hot QCD medium created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

According to the CPT theorem, which states that the combined operation of charge conjugation, parity transformation and time reversal must be conserved, particles and their antiparticles should have the same mass and lifetime but opposite charge and magnetic moment. Here, we test CPT symmetry in a nucleus containing a strange quark, more specifically in the hypertriton. This hypernucleus is the lightest one yet discovered and consists of a proton, a neutron, and a $Λ$ hyperon. With data recorded by the STAR detector{\cite{TPC,HFT,TOF}} at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, we measure the $Λ$ hyperon binding energy $B_Λ$ for the hypertriton, and find that it differs from the widely used value{\cite{B_1973}} and from predictions{\cite{2019_weak, 1995_weak, 2002_weak, 2014_weak}}, where the hypertriton is treated as a weakly bound system. Our results place stringent constraints on the hyperon-nucleon interaction{\cite{Hammer2002, STAR-antiH3L}}, and have implications for understanding neutron star interiors, where strange matter may be present{\cite{Chatterjee2016}}. A precise comparison of the masses of the hypertriton and the antihypertriton allows us to test CPT symmetry in a nucleus with strangeness for the first time, and we observe no deviation from the expected exact symmetry.

We find that the values of $B_2$ for anti-deuterons are systematically lower than those for deuterons, indicating that the correlation volume of anti-baryons is larger than that of baryons at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ from 19.6 to 39 GeV. In addition, values of $B_2$ are found to vary with collision energy and show a broad minimum around $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=\ $20 to 40 GeV, which might imply a change of the equation of state of the medium in these collisions.

The data also show that $\ln(v_2/\varepsilon_2)$ scales linearly with $\langle \mathrm{N_{ch}} \rangle^{-1/3}$. These measurements provide insight into initial-geometry fluctuations and the role of viscous hydrodynamic attenuation on $v_n$ from small to large collision systems.

We investigate an idea, how to use analysis of the bremsstrahlung photons to study the internal structure of proton under nuclear reaction with nucleus. A new model is constructed to describe bremsstrahlung emission of photons which accompanies the scattering of protons off nuclei. Our bremsstrahlung formalism uses many-nucleon basis that allows to analyze coherent and incoherent bremsstrahlung emissions. As scattered proton can be under the influence of strong forces and produces the largest bremsstrahlung contribution to full spectrum, we focus on accurate determination of its quantum evolution concerning nucleus basing on quantum mechanics and scattering theory. For such a motivation, we at first time generalize Pauli equation with interacting potential describing evolution of fermion inside strong field, with including the electromagnetic form-factors of nucleon basing on DIS theory. Anomalous magnetic momenta of nucleons reinforce our motivation to develop such a formalism, starting from low energy. The full bremsstrahlung spectrum in our model (after renormalization) is dependent on form-factors of the scattered proton. For calculations, we choose the scattering of $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ at proton beam energy of 190~MeV, where experimental bremsstrahlung data were obtained with high accuracy. We show that the full bremsstrahlung spectrum is sensitive to the form-factors of the scattered proton. In the limit without such form-factors, we reconstruct our previous result (where internal structure of the scattered proton was not studied).

We investigate possibility of emission of the bremsstrahlung photons in nuclear reactions with hypernuclei for the first time. A new model of the bremsstrahlung emission which accompanies interactions between $α$ particles and hypernuclei is constructed, where a new formalism for the magnetic momenta of nucleons and hyperon inside hypernucleus is added. For first calculations, we choose $α$ decay of the normal nucleus $^{210}{\rm Po}$ and the hypernucleus $^{211}_Λ{\rm Po}$. We find that (1) emission for the hypernucleus $^{211}_Λ{\rm Po}$ is larger than for normal nucleus $^{210}{\rm Po}$, (2) difference between these spectra is small. We propose a way how to find hypernuclei, where role of hyperon is the most essential in emission of bremsstrahlung photons during $α$ decay. As demonstration of such a property, we show that the spectra for the hypernuclei $^{107}_Λ{\rm Te}$ and $^{109}_Λ{\rm Te}$ are essentially larger than the spectra for the normal nuclei $^{106}{\rm Te}$ and $^{108}{\rm Te}$. Such a difference is explained by additional contribution of emission to the full bremsstrahlung, which is formed by magnetic moment of hyperon inside hypernucleus. The bremsstrahlung emission formed by such a mechanism, is of the magnetic type. A new formula for fast estimations of bremsstrahlung spectra for even-even hypernuclei is proposed, where role of magnetic moment of hyperon of hypernucleus in formation of the bremsstrahlung emission is shown explicitly. Such an analysis opens possibility of new experimental study of properties of hypernuclei via bremsstrahlung study.

We generalize the theory of nuclear decay and capture of Gamow that is based on tunneling through the barrier and internal oscillations inside the nucleus. In our formalism an additional factor is obtained, which describes distribution of the wave function of the $α$ particle inside the nuclear region. We discover new most stable states (called quasibound states) of the compound nucleus (CN) formed during the capture of $α$ particle by the nucleus. With a simple example, we explain why these states cannot appear in traditional calculations of the $α$ capture cross sections based on monotonic penetrabilities of a barrier, but they appear in a complete description of the evolution of the CN. Our result is obtained by a complete description of the CN evolution, which has the advantages of (1) a clear picture of the formation of the CN and its disintegration, (2) a detailed quantum description of the CN, (3) tests of the calculated amplitudes based on quantum mechanics (not realized in other approaches), and (4) high accuracy of calculations (not achieved in other approaches). These peculiarities are shown with the capture reaction of $α+ ^{44}{\rm Ca}$. We predict quasibound energy levels and determine fusion probabilities for this reaction. The difference between our approach and theory of quasistationary states with complex energies applied for the $α$ capture is also discussed. We show (1) that theory does not provide calculations for the cross section of $α$ capture (according to modern models of the $α$ capture), in contrast with our formalism, and (2) these two approaches describe different states of the $α$ capture (for the same $α$-nucleus potential).

We report the first measurements of the moments of net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV. The collision centrality and energy dependence of the mean ($M$), variance ($σ^2$), skewness ($S$), and kurtosis ($κ$) for net-kaon multiplicity distributions as well as the ratio $σ^2/M$ and the products $Sσ$ and $κσ^2$ are presented. Comparisons are made with Poisson and negative binomial baseline calculations as well as with UrQMD, a transport model (UrQMD) that does not include effects from the QCD critical point. Within current uncertainties, the net-kaon cumulant ratios appear to be monotonic as a function of collision energy.

These measurements provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the initial collision zone and are important for constraining models of a subsequent low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma expansion phase. We investigate correlations between the first, second and third harmonics predicted as a consequence of fluctuations in the initial state. The dependence of the correlations on the pseudorapidity separation between particles show hints of a breaking of longitudinal invariance. We compare our results to a number of state-of-the art hydrodynamic calculations with different initial states and temperature dependent viscosities. These measurements provide important steps towards constraining the temperature dependent transport and the longitudinal structure of the initial state at RHIC.

We present measurements of three-particle correlations for various harmonics in Au+Au collisions at energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=7.7$ to 200 GeV using the STAR detector. The quantity $\langle\cos(mφ_1+nφ_2-(m+n)φ_3)\rangle$ is evaluated as a function of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$, collision centrality, transverse momentum, $p_T$, pseudo-rapidity difference, $Δη$, and harmonics ($m$ and $n$). These data provide detailed information on global event properties like the three-dimensional structure of the initial overlap region, the expansion dynamics of the matter produced in the collisions, and the transport properties of the medium. A strong dependence on $Δη$ is observed for most harmonic combinations consistent with breaking of longitudinal boost invariance. Data reveal changes with energy in the two-particle correlation functions relative to the second-harmonic event-plane and provide ways to constrain models of heavy-ion collisions over a wide range of collision energies.

In this paper, we compare the RMF theory and the model of deformed oscillator shells (DOS) in description of the quantum properties of the bound states of the spherically symmetric light nuclei. We obtain an explicit analytical relation between differential equations for the RMF theory and DOS model, which determine wave functions for nucleons. On such a basis we perform analysis of correspondence of quantum properties of nuclei. We find: (1) Potential $V_{RMF}$ of the RMF theory for nucleons has the wave functions $f$ and $g$ with joint part $h$ coincident exactly with the nucleon wave function of DOS model with potential $V_{\rm shell}$. But, a difference between $V_{RMF}$ and $V_{\rm shell}$ is essential for any nucleus. (2) The nucleon wave functions and densities obtained by the DOS and RMF theories are essentially different. The nucleon densities of the RMF theory contradict to knowledge about distribution of the proton and neutron densities inside the nuclei obtained from experimental data. This indicates that $g$ and $f$ have no sense of the wave functions of quantum physics. But, $h$ provides proper description of quantum properties of nucleons inside the nucleus. (3) We calculate meson function $w^{0}$ and potential $V_{w}$ in RMF theory based on the found nucleon density. (4) $f$ and $g$ are not solutions of Dirac equation with $V_{w}$. If the meson theory describes quantum properties of nucleus well, then a difference between $V_{w}$ and $V_{RMF}$ should be as small as possible. We introduce new quantum corrections characterizing difference between these potentials. We find that (a) The function $w^{0}$ should be reinforced strongly, (b) The corrections are necessary to describe the quantum properties of the nuclei.

We propose a bremsstrahlung model allowing to extract information about probabilities of formation of such nucleus on the basis of analysis of experimental cross-sections of the bremsstrahlung photons. In order to realize this approach, the model includes elements of microscopic theory and also probabilities of formation of the short-lived compound nucleus. Results of calculations of the bremsstrahlung spectra are in good agreement with the experimental cross-sections.

Based on both the constituent quark picture and the instanton model for QCD vacuum, we calculate the unpolarized and polarized gluon distributions in the constituent quark and in the nucleon. Our approach consists of the two main steps. At the first step, we calculate the gluon distributions inside the constituent quark generated by the perturbative quark-gluon interaction, the non-perturbative quark-gluon interaction, and the non-perturbative quark-gluon-pion anomalous chromomagnetic interaction. The non-perturbative interactions are related to the existence of the instantons, strong topological fluctuations of gluon fields, in the QCD vacuum. At the second step, the convolution model is applied to derive the gluon distributions in the nucleon. A very important role of the pion field in producing the unpolarized and the polarized gluon distributions in the hadrons is discovered. We discuss a possible solution of the proton spin problem.

With this we propose to classify the skyrmions by two topological numbers $(m,n)$, the monopole number $m$ and the shell (radial) number $n$. In this scheme the popular (non spherically symmetric) skyrmions are classified as the $(m,1)$ skyrmions but the spherically symmetric skyrmions are classified as the $(1,n)$ skyrmions, and the baryon number $B$ is given by $B=mn$. Moreover, we show that the vacuum of the Skyrme theory has the structure of the vacuum of the Sine-Gordon theory and QCD combined together, which can also be classified by two topological numbers $(p,q)$. This puts the Skyrme theory in a totally new perspective.

We observe that the transverse momentum dependence of $φ$ and $Ω$ $v_{2}$ is similar to that of $π$ and $p$, respectively, which may indicate that the heavier strange quark flows as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. This observation constitutes a clear piece of evidence for the development of partonic collectivity in heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energy. Number of constituent quark scaling is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for both 0-30$\%$ and 30-80$\%$ collision centrality. There is an indication of the breakdown of previously observed mass ordering between $φ$ and proton $v_{2}$ at low transverse momentum in the 0-30$\%$ centrality range, possibly indicating late hadronic interactions affecting the proton $v_{2}$.

Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model.

We analyze if the nucleon structure of the $α$ decaying nucleus can be visible in the experimental bremsstrahlung spectra of the emitted photons which accompany such a decay. We develop a new formalism of the bremsstrahlung model taking into account distribution of nucleons in the $α$ decaying nuclear system. We conclude the following: (1) After inclusion of the nucleon structure into the model the calculated bremsstrahlung spectrum is changed very slowly for a majority of the $α$ decaying nuclei. However, we have observed that visible changes really exist for the $^{106}{\rm Te}$ nucleus ($Q_α=4.29$ MeV, $T_{1/2}$=70 mks) even for the energy of the emitted photons up to 1 MeV. This nucleus is a good candidate for future experimental study of this task. (2) Inclusion of the nucleon structure into the model increases the bremsstrahlung probability of the emitted photons. (3) We find the following tendencies for obtaining the nuclei, which have bremsstrahlung spectra more sensitive to the nucleon structure: (a) direction to nuclei with smaller $Z$, (b) direction to nuclei with larger $Q_α$-values.

For $α$-capture by $^{40}{\rm Ca}$ and $^{44}{\rm Ca}$, such an approach gives (1) the parameters of the $α$--nucleus potential and (2) fusion probabilities. This method found new parametrization and fusion probabilities and decreased the error by $41.72$ times for $α+ ^{40}{\rm Ca}$ and $34.06$ times for $α+ ^{44}{\rm Ca}$ in a description of experimental data in comparison with existing results. We show that the sharp angular momentum cutoff proposed by Glas and Mosel is a rough approximation, Wong's formula and the Hill-Wheeler approach determine the penetrability of the barrier without a correct consideration of the barrier shape, and the WKB approach gives reduced fusion probabilities. Based on our fusion probability formula, we explain the difference between experimental cross-sections for $α+ ^{40}{\rm Ca}$ and $α+ ^{44}{\rm Ca}$, which is connected with the theory of coexistence of the spherical and deformed shapes in the ground state for nuclei near the neutron magic shell $N=20$. To provide deeper insight into the physics of nuclei with the new magic number $N=26$, the cross-section for $α+ ^{46}{\rm Ca}$ is predicted for future experimental tests. The role of nuclear deformations in calculations of the fusion probabilities is analyzed.

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $Δφ\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $Δη$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($Δφ\simπ$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $Δφ$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos nΔφ\rangle$, have a strong $Δη$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

There are different operators of quark and gluon momenta, orbital angular momenta, and gluon spin in the nucleon structure study. The precise meaning of these operators are studied based on gauge invariance, Lorentz covariance and canonical quantization rule. The advantage and disadvantage of different definitions are analyzed. A gauge invariant canonical decomposition of the total momentum and angular momentum into quark and gluon parts is suggested based on the decomposition of the gauge potential into gauge invariant (covariant) physical part and gauge dependent pure gauge part. Challenges to this proposal are answered.

Abstract:
We report the beam energy (\sqrt s_{NN} = 7.7 - 200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. We report the beam energy (\sqrt s_{NN} = 7.7 - 200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4 < pT < 0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσand κσ^{2}, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and anti-proton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation, and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

Abstract:
A new approach is presented to determine the proton-nucleus interactions from the analysis of the accompanying photon bremsstrahlung. We study the scattering of $p + ^{208}{\rm Pb}$ at the proton incident energies of 140 and 145~MeV, and the scattering of $p + ^{12}{\rm C}$, $p + ^{58}{\rm Ni}$, $p + ^{107}{\rm Ag}$ and $p + ^{197}{\rm Au}$ at the proton incident energy of 190~MeV. The model deter…

The model determines contributions of the coherent emission (formed by an interaction between the scattering proton and nucleus as a whole without the internal many-nucleon structure), incoherent emission (formed by interactions between the scattering proton and nucleus with the internal many-nucleon structure), and transition between them in dependence on the photon energy. The radius-parameter of the proton-nucleus potential for these reactions is extracted from the experimental bremsstrahlung data analysis. We explain the hump-shaped plateau in the intermediate- and high-energy regions of the spectra by the essential presence of the incoherent emission, while at low energies the coherent emission predominates which produces the logarithmic shape spectrum. We provide our predictions (in absolute scale) for the angular distribution of the bremsstrahlung photons in order to test our model, results and analysis in further experiments.

The EMC effect is studied by using the GLR-MQ-ZSR equation with minimum number of free parameters, where the nuclear shadowing effect is a dynamical evolution result of the equation, and nucleon swelling and Fermi motion in the nuclear environment deform the input parton distributions. Parton distributions of both proton and nucleus are predicted in a unified framework. We show that the parton recombination as a higher twist correction plays an essential role in the evolution of parton distributions either of proton or nucleus. We find that the nuclear antishadowing contributes a part of enhancement of the ratio of the structure functions around $x\sim 0.1$, while the other part origins from the deformation of the nuclear valence quark distributions. We point out that the nuclear shadowing and antishadowing effects in the gluon distribution are not stronger than that in the quark distributions.

The parton distributions in the proton are evaluated dynamically using a nonlinear QCD evolution equation - the DGLAP equation with twist-4 (the GLR-MQ-ZSR) corrections - starting from a low scale $μ^2$, where the nucleon consists of valence quarks. We find that the negative nonlinear corrections can improve the perturbative stability of the QCD evolution equation at low $Q^2$. Our resulting parton distributions of the proton with four free parameters are compatible with the existing databases.
We show that the sea quark distributions exhibit a positive and flattish behavior at small $x$ and low $Q^2$. This approach provides a powerful tool to connect the quark models of the hadron and various non-perturbative effects on them at scale $μ^2$ with the measured structure functions at high scale $Q^2>> μ^2$.
