Abstract:
In this work, we present the modelling and numerical simulation of a molten glass fluid flow in a furnace melting basin. We first derive a model for a molten glass fluid flow and present numerical simulations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). We further discuss and validate the results obtained from the simulations by comparing them with experimental results. Finally, we also present a non…

Finally, we also present a non-intrusive Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to efficiently handle scenarios which require multiple simulations of the fluid flow upon changing parameters of relevant industrial interest. This approach lets us obtain solutions of a complex 3D model, with good accuracy with respect to the FEM solution, yet with negligible associated computational times.

Abstract:
In this work, we introduce an a posteriori error indicator for the reduced basis modelling of turbulent flows. It is based upon the $k^{-5/3}$ Kolmogorov turbulence theory, thus it may be applied to any numerical discretisation of LES turbulence models. The main idea of this indicator is that if the full-order solution and the Reduced Order solution are close enough, then their flow energy spectru…

In this work, we introduce an a posteriori error indicator for the reduced basis modelling of turbulent flows. It is based upon the $k^{-5/3}$ Kolmogorov turbulence theory, thus it may be applied to any numerical discretisation of LES turbulence models. The main idea of this indicator is that if the full-order solution and the Reduced Order solution are close enough, then their flow energy spectrum within the inertial range should also be close. We present some numerical tests which supports that the use of this indicator is helpful, obtaining large computational speed-ups. We use as full-order model a Finite Element discretisation of the unsteady LES Smagorinsky turbulence model.

We obtained the phase and intensity images of an object by detecting classical light which never interacted with it. With a double passage of a pump and a signal laser beams through a nonlinear crystal, we observe interference between the two idler beams produced by stimulated parametric down conversion. The object is placed in the amplified signal beam after its first passage through the crystal, and the image is observed in the interference of the generated idler beams. High contrast images can be obtained even for objects with small transmittance coefficient due to the geometry of the interferometer and to the stimulated parametric emission. Like its quantum counterpart, this three-colour imaging concept can be useful when the object must be probed with light at a wavelength for which detectors are not available.

Abstract:
Detector-plane prototypes of the very forward calorimetry of a future detector at an e+e- collider have been built and their performance was measured in an electron beam. The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sens…

The detector plane comprises silicon or GaAs pad sensors, dedicated front-end and ADC ASICs, and an FPGA for data concentration. Measurements of the signal-to-noise ratio and the response as a function of the position of the sensor are presented. A deconvolution method is successfully applied, and a comparison of the measured shower shape as a function of the absorber depth with a Monte-Carlo simulation is given.

Abstract:
In this work we apply a mathematical model of photosynthesis to quantify the potential for photosynthetic life in the very Early Archean oceans. We assume the presence of oceanic blockers of ultraviolet radiation, specifically ferrous ions. For this scenario, our results suggest a potential for photosynthetic life greater than or similar to that in later eras/eons, such as the Late Archean and the…
