Electromagnetic showers developing from the collision of an ultra-intense laser pulse with a beam of high-energy electrons or photons are investigated under conditions relevant to future experiments on multi-petawatt laser facilities. A semi-analytical model is derived that predicts the shower multiplicity, i.e. the number of pairs produced per incident seed particle (electron or gamma photon). The model is benchmarked against particle-in-cell simulations and shown to be accurate over a wide range of seed particle energies (100 MeV - 40 GeV), laser relativistic field strengths ($10 < a_0 < 1000$), and quantum parameter $χ_0$ (ranging from 1 to 40). It is shown that, for experiments expected in the next decade, only the first generations of pairs contribute to the shower while multiplicities larger than unity are predicted. Guidelines for forthcoming experiments are discussed considering laser facilities such as Apollon and ELI Beamlines. The difference between electron- and photon seeding and the influence of the laser pulse duration are investigated.

Abstract:
It was suggested [A. R. Bell & J. G. Here, we present a general solution to the long-standing problem of the avalanche growth rate calculation. It was suggested [A. R. Bell & J. G. Kirk, PRL 101, 200403 (2008)] that an avalanche of electron-positron pairs can be triggered in the laboratory by a standing wave generated by intense laser fields. Here, we present a general solution to the long-standing problem of the avalanche growth rate calculation. We provide a simple formula that accounts for the damping of the growth rate due to pair and photon migration from the region of prolific generation. We apply our model to a variety of 3D field configurations including focused laser beams and show that i) the particle yield for the full range of intensity able to generate an avalanche can be predicted, ii) a critical intensity threshold due to migration is identified, iii) the effect of migration is negligible at a higher intensity and the local growth rate dominates. Excellent agreement with Monte Carlo and self-consistent PIC simulations is shown. The growth rate calculation allows us to predict when abundant pair production will induce a back-reaction on the generating field due to plasma collective effects and screening. Our model can be applied to study the generation of electron-positron pair avalanches in realistic fields to plan future experiments at ultra-high-intensity laser facilities.

QED cascades in a strong electromagnetic field of optical range and arbitrary configuration are considered. A general expression for short-time dependence of the key electron quantum dynamical parameter is derived, allowing to generalize the effective threshold condition of QED cascade onset. The generalized theory is applied to selfsustained cascades in a single focused laser pulse. According to numerical simulations, if a GeV electron bunch is used as a seed, an ordinary cascade can be converted into the selfsustained one. As an application, it would be also possible to produce this way bright collimated photon beams with up to GeV photon energies.

We derive general expression for $χ$ of an initially slow electron in an arbitrary electromagnetic field for a time range $t\ll 1/ω$, where $ω$ is the field carrier frequency. Using this formula, we consider a special field configuration of multiple colliding focused laser beams and optimize it to provide cascade development at laser power below $10$ PW and intensity of the order of $10^{23}$W/cm$^2$. Such parameters of the beams will be obtained with a new generation of laser facilities, particularly the ELI Beamlines, in the coming years.

We consider interaction of a high-energy electron beam with two counterpropagating femtosecond laser pulses. Nonlinear Compton scattering and electron-positron pair production by the emitted photons result in development of an electromagnetic "shower-type" cascade, which however collapses rather quickly due to energy losses by secondary particles. Nevertheless, the laser field accelerates the low-energy electrons and positrons trapped in the focal region, thus giving rise to development of electromagnetic cascade of another type ("avalanche-type"). This effect of cascade collapse and revival can be observed at the electron beam energy of the order of several GeV and intensity of the colliding laser pulses of the level of $10^{24}$W/cm$^2$. This means that it can be readily observed at the novel laser facilities which are either planned for the nearest future, or are already under construction. The proposed experimental setup provides the most realistic and promissory way to observe the "avalanche-type" cascades.

We consider pair creation by collision of a couple of counterpropagating electromagnetic pulses with arbitrary frequency ratio, mostly in the context of setup with collision of optical and coherent hard X- (or gamma-) ray pulses. This problem is non-perturbative and in general does not admit exact analytical solutions. We discuss several known approaches according to the ratio of the parameters. Certain regions of the parameter space are not covered by the existing approximations or models. We present a new simplified exactly solvable model with one of the pulses being a delta-pulse. This model partially fills the yet unexplored gap in the space of parameters. The shape of the momentum distribution of the created particles in such a model is discussed. Even though the model may not have immediate implications for the forthcoming experiments, it can still provide some hints for better understanding of the fully non-perturbative regime and vacuum instability in QED interactions of extremely strong and short laser pulses.
