Abstract:
We perform an experimental investigation of Quantum Discord with Spin-Orbit X-states. These states are prepared through the incoherent superposition of different laser beans, where a two-level system is encoded in polarization and the first-order Hermitian-Gaussian modes, as proposed in Phys. Rev. A 103,0022411 (2022). We characterize different classes of spin-orbit X-states by performing an all-o…

We characterize different classes of spin-orbit X-states by performing an all-optical tomography for polarization and first-order transverse mode degrees of freedom. We also perform a study on the dependence of Discord with respect to the Fidelity of spin-orbit modes, revealing that Discord is very sensitive to incoherent noise. Our experimental results align with the theoretical predictions of Quantum Discord when accounting for the effect of fidelity. These results reinforce the spin-orbit modes as an important platform for quantum information processing. On the other hand, the need of astigmatic optical elements to implement unitary operations required by quantum information protocols implies in a loss of fidelity and quantum correlations. Alternative methods to manipulate spin-orbit modes are welcome.

Abstract:
We introduce a proposal to prepare spin-obit maximally discordant mixed states by a linear optical circuit, with quantum bits (qubits) encoded in the polarization and transverse mode degrees of freedom of photons. In particular, we discuss how to prepare non-balanced spin-orbit entangled states, applying this technique to obtain maximally discordant mixed states. We present a simulation of the opt…

In particular, we discuss how to prepare non-balanced spin-orbit entangled states, applying this technique to obtain maximally discordant mixed states. We present a simulation of the optical circuit by using the Jones matrix formalism. We performed a study of entanglement, classical and quantum correlations. The results show excellent agreement with the underlying theory and open a new experimental approach for addressing quantum correlations in optical setups.

We propose a procedure to identify and classify genuine tripartite entanglement in pure 3-qubit states via the Activated Bipartite Entanglement (ABE), which is defined here as the difference between the Entanglement of Assistance and the Entanglement of Formation. We propose a procedure to identify and classify genuine tripartite entanglement in pure 3-qubit states via the Activated Bipartite Entanglement (ABE), which is defined here as the difference between the Entanglement of Assistance and the Entanglement of Formation. We show that for pure states belonging to one of the two inequivalent classes of genuine tripartite entanglement, i.e., GHZ or W states, the ABE is always greater than zero. For separable and biseparable states it is always null. In addition, our approach is capable to distinguish between genuine tripartite entangled states, those belonging to the GHZ class from those belonging to the W class. We also present an experimental proposal, by using linear optical circuits and internal degrees of freedom of a single photon, to measure the ABE and to verify the characterization via activated entanglement. The circuit simulation shows an excellent agreement with theoretical prediction for a wide class of GHZ and W states.

We experimentally observed the violation of Kujula-Dzhafarov noncontextuality inequalities by non-separable spin-orbit laser modes. Qubits are encoded on polarization and transverse modes of an intense laser beam. A spin-orbit non-separable mode was produced by means of a radial polarization converter (S-plate). The results show that contextuality can be investigated by using spin-orbit modes in a simple way, corroborating recent works stating that such system can emulate single-photon experiments. Additionally, an improvement in the non-separable mode preparation allowed us to observe a greater violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality for such system. The results are in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions of quantum mechanics.

An experimental setup was conceived to encode one qubit on the polarization of an optical beam and another qubit on its transverse mode. The action of the reservoir is implemented as conditional operations on these two qubits, controlled by the longitudinal path as an ancillary degree of freedom. An entanglement witness and the two-qubit concurrence are easily evaluated from direct intensity measurements showing an excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Here we report the experimental creation of such a non-separable, tripartite GHZ-like state of path, polarization and transverse modes of a classical laser beam. We use a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an additional mirror and other optical elements to perform measurements that violate Mermin's inequality. This demonstration of a classical optical analogue of tripartite entanglement paves the path to novel optical applications inspired by multipartite quantum information protocols.
