Carlos Ramirez-Rosa is a member of the Chicago City Council in Illinois, representing Ward 35. He assumed office in 2015. His current term ends on May 17, 2027.

Ramirez-Rosa ran for re-election to the Chicago City Council to represent Ward 35 in Illinois. He won in the general election on February 28, 2023.

Ramirez-Rosa was a 2018 Democratic candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 4th Congressional District of Illinois.[1] He dropped out of the race on January 9, 2018.[2]

Biography

Rosa was identified by the Huffington Post as a progressive Democrat. He has been a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), supported Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential campaign, and opposed some of the initiatives of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a centrist Democrat, while serving on the Chicago City Council. He was the only alderman to vote against a proposed $95 million police academy supported by the mayor. In September 2017, state Sen. Daniel Biss (D), a 2018 gubernatorial candidate, selected Rosa to run for lieutenant governor on his ticket. Rosa left the Biss ticket less than one week after joining due to his refusal to oppose the DSA's support for the Boycott, Divest Sanction (BDS) movement related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.[3]

Noteworthy events

On November 6, 2023, Ramirez-Rosa announced he was leaving his two leadership positions as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's (D) floor leader and as chair of the city council's zoning committee, which was effective on December 1.[7] Ramirez-Rosa's resignations resulted from an interaction with city council member Emma Mitts, during which it is alleged he tried to physically block Mitts from entering the council's chambers prior to a procedural vote.[7] Multiple aldermen have called for Ramirez-Rosa's resignation from the council. Ramirez-Rosa issued a formal apology statement. The full text of the statement can be read here.[7] Ballotpedia is monitoring this story and will add updates as further information is released.
