of her body. According to Woods, the accident actually strengthened Priscilla’s resolve to continue running. In the aftermath of the accident, Priscilla was unable to maintain her former training regimen. Instead, she resorted to aqua jogging. She began her recovery in the pool, stretching her limbs slowly and painfully in water because her body was unable to support her own weight. Upon being cleared by her doctors, former coach Sue Williams gave Moreno the opportunity to return to the cross country team, but could not guarantee anything other than a tryout. Moreno fought back with only 12 miles of training per week, as that was all her body could muster. “I couldn’t be bitter,” Moreno said. “Anything from that moment on was a step forward.” Not only did Moreno return to the team, but as a junior she finished 55th at the Stanford Invitational. During the past off-season

Moreno trained in the mountains of Tahoe, gaining experience at high altitudes, and focused on speed work as well as stamina. Moreno’s resolve paid off as she took 10th place overall at Stanford, leading all Aggie runners. Moreno said running is something that she will do for the rest of her life. “It’s the purest form of competition,” she said. “There are no referees, and no bad calls. It’s just you, your opponents, and the finish line.” In hindsight, Priscilla said her involvement in Athletes in Action, a Christian group where she fostered personal connections with other student-ath-letes, motivated her to keep running. Unsure of her runningplans beyond college, Priscilla has decided to take swimming lessons. She aspires to participate in a triathlon and is waiting to hear from law schools about her application for fall of 2005. To think it all started with Nintendo. years, Kern believes the divers should be notably improved this season. “ [Tonne] has instituted a stricter regimen, getting the team together and more organized,” said Kem. “It’s a better environment.” Motekaitis, in his ninth year as men’s head coach, said he was reserving judgment of the team. “It was a mixed bag at the meet, which is to be expected at this time of year,” Motekaitis said. “I’m neither pleased nor dissatisfied.” The women’s team’s oudook is equally uncertain entering the season. With only one senior on the roster, many of the female swimmers and divers will be getting their first collegiate experience in the water. The women are coached by Barbara Jahn, who is now entering her 30th year at UCD. junior Yuka Kobayashi will lead this group after winning the 100 back, 200 back and 200 fly at last season’s PCSC championships. Sophomore Hannah Watanabe has already gotten off to a great start after winning the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM against San Jose

State University on Oct. 16, and said she believes this could be a breakthrough year for the Aggies. “We have so many new people and it’s so exciting because there is a lot of potential this year, a lot of speed,” Watanabe said. With the help of junior Renee Dyer, who set the second-best alltime 100 free mark while competing against SJSU, the women should have reasons for optimism. Improving times over the year, though, will decide how well the Aggies do in their first season against predominantly Division I swimmers and divers. Last Saturday, both teams hosted the annual alumni meet in which past UCD swimmers are encouraged to come out and compete against the younger members of the teams. “It’s more about having fun than anything else,” Kern said. The men’s and women’s swimming teams will host Seattle University at the Schall Aquatics Center Thursday before heading to the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif, for Friday and Saturday. The diving teams will accompany the swimmers for the Invitational. JOSH KOEHN can be reached at sports@californiaaggie.com.
