In his article “Old Layer” of Japanese Historical Thought” (1972), Maruyama Masao characterized the “main pattern of thought which constitutes the old layer of Japanese historical thought”, as “Flowing energy that transforms and develops itself continuously” (Jp: tsugi tsugi ni nariyuku ikihohi”). According to us, this “Flowering energy” is not only a historical element which characterized traditional Japanese philosophy, but is also a very important element which influences contemporary Japanese society even now. This “Flowering energy” may make us narcissistic by permitting us to affirm our natural desires as such. If we are right, this “Flowering energy” may also fortify the structure of Japanese society, which is highly centralized, in that it affirms our desire to get ahead and our desire to take a position at the “center” of Japanese society.
