Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine has been reaccredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
"Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation is an essential stamp of approval for high-quality M.D. education in the U.S. and Canada," says Fredric Meyer, M.D., the Juanita Kious Waugh Executive Dean for Education at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Surveyors visited Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester from April 28 to May 1 to review all aspects of the medical school's operations. Mayo Clinic received the results of the survey on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019.
"Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine leaders are so grateful to faculty, staff, and students for the commitment and dedication required to prepare for and achieve this accreditation," says Michele Halyard, M.D., vice dean at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and faculty accreditation lead for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
Preparation for the accreditation survey began more than three years ago. More than 400 faculty members, staff, students, and administrators worked on a rigorous self-study to evaluate and enhance the medical education program.
"The work done to prepare supports our efforts to continuously improve Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine," Dr. Halyard says.
The surveyors commended the school for its focus on meeting the needs of the students across locations and disciplines, specifically pointing out excellent academic counseling, career advising, and personal counseling as areas of strength. Surveyors also complimented the school's investment in faculty support and education technology.
The results noted a few minor areas where changes are needed to fully meet Liaison Committee on Medical Education requirements.
"We satisfied 99.9% of the requirements," Dr. Meyer says. "This is a huge accomplishment, and a testimony to our wonderful students, dedicated faculty, expert administrative staff and to Mayo Clinic as a premier biomedical education institution."
Reaccreditation occurs every eight years.
