History
Originally established in the Middle East, the order moved to Europe where it took part in the Northern Crusades. These Crusades were efforts to conquer and Christianize the last Pagan territories in Europe, Prussia and the Baltic Sea territories. Once Christianization was complete the Knights turned against Poland, Lithuania and the Novgorod Republic which were already Christian. They lost control of their power-base in Prussia in 1525.
