- Bingo! JPGs are a compressed format. Also the PNG allows me to preserve the EXIF data. For whatever reason, when I use JPG, it vanishes. Needsmoreritalin (talk) 01:26, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

The spotted hyena, native to sub-Saharan Africa, is a highly successful animal, being the most common large carnivore in Africa. Its success is due in part to its adaptability and opportunism; it is primarily a hunter but may also scavenge, with the capacity to eat and digest skin, bone and other animal waste. c/u/n by Poco a poco (talk) 21:00, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

- I remember climbing a 5,000 meter peak (Bolivar) for 8 days to take some photos of the stars, but we arrived at the top so tired that we fell asleep in a tent, I remember that taking a step there is like running in a football stadium, my heart beats very fast, but in the middle of the night I woke up to a windless night with incredible clarity, when I saw the sky that night it was so beautiful that I simply began to cry perhaps also affected by the lack of oxygen, I could not think rationally and take the photos properly, but I remember that the sky there is completely different, the stars are brighter and you can see the shapes of the constellations, it is very different from the sky we see.1 2 3 Wilfredor (talk) 13:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose What has changed since last week? Nothing? Then it's a remake of Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Panoramica do Pico das Agulhas Negras.jpg/2.
- I don't think it is clever to renominate again and again the same FPCs that get 5 supports or 6 supports, until you get the 7. If a picture gets lack of participation, it is usually an indicator of moderate or low wow. Then it's better to try a different candidate. Otherwise you will exhaust the participants with repetitive visuals. And we will support only to get rid of these patterns. Apart from that, this image is of low quality, in my opinion, even for the period.

- Low quality for 1890? This can be explained in part due to the process of "whitening" Machado de Assis (many photographers at the time perhaps did not want to show the fact that the country's greatest writer was pardo/black). ★ 21:32, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- I worked very hard to try and get the skin tone as close to correct as I could with this image. - With all respect, Adam, you're not responsible. But ArionStar had been warned several times in the past, with quite clear messages. I understand this is your picture and want it promoted, since you nominated it the first time. But both of you had voted already last week. So what do you expect? Many of us may get tired with such repetitive tasks, if it gets a norm. Let's maintain FPC as an enthusiastic and emulative voting place instead, with diversity.
- If a picture fails, no problem, just accept the consensus and try something better! See the list of similar candidatures which didn't pass last month, only because one or two votes were missing:
- score 5-0, score 6-0, score 5-0, score 7-4, score 13-7, score 7-4, score 5-2, score 6-1, score 5-2, score 6-0, score 5-3, score 5-0. Imagine all of them nominated for a second round, hell :-) "Okay, bad luck, I'll try again next week" :-)
- We had related discussions in previous nominations and the FP talk page, and I remember most of the people consider we have to wait a relatively long period of time before renominating a picture, unless there are modifications made since the last time. Which is not the case here. Best regards -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:52, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

- Question @Thi, Yann, George Chernilevsky, and Lviatour: did you notice this picture has failed just last week?
- It is similar to Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Couillet - chevalements de la mine du Pêchon - 7.jpg/2 also nominated by the same user ArionEstar = ArionStar = ★ with the reason "Per 6 supports × 0 opposes.". This result may impact the voting process in the future. Adam Cuerden is certainly aware of this "tacit rule" since he made this suggestion in the FPC talk page in 2019 . @Ikan Kekek: proposed to wait at least 12 months here. Like Daniel Case's procedural oppose, many participants agree. What others think? -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:28, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

- Comment Very nice birdy. But may it be this is an immature bird (this, for instance, is presumably a picture of an adult Coracias caudatus specimen), in this case this should be also described as such. Also, of course, Category:Protected areas of Tanzania is clearly redundant, because: "Protected areas of Tanzania" -> "National parks of Tanzania" -> "Serengeti National Park" (-> "Animals of Serengeti National Park" -> "Birds of Serengeti National Park"), you should therefore remove it from all your uploaded picture of the same session, if there are more available. --A.Savin 17:43, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your comment. I'm not sure yet if it's a juvenile and I will do more research on it (I don't want to add a statement to the file without being sure of it), if it's the case I'll edit accordingly. As for the category "Protected areas of Tanzania", it is automatically added to all uploads made with the WLE in Tanzania 2024 upload wizard and may be needed or useful to the organizers. Therefore I would prefer to wait until the end of WLE 2024 in case this category is needed for the national or international jury depending how their scripts where made. Once WLE 2024 has ended, I'll happily remove that category that was automatically added. -- Giles Laurent (talk) 02:40, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- After checking it seems that it is an adult and not an immature one -- Giles Laurent (talk) 13:16, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

- Support Wow that's very appealing. I like the way the clear and sharp glass structure in the foreground is interacting with the very moody and blurry background. The bird is adding wonderfully to this composition. This image is telling a story about a nice evening at the sea and "Fernweh". --August (talk) 22:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support Translucent glass spheres work very well with the contre-jour light. Although out of focus, the bird is nice and adds something to the atmosphere. The bit of bush at the lower left corner is more distracting in my view (because too small to be considered part of the composition). - Comment Question: how close to original colors did you come with scan with DSLR. The other is you scaned developed film and checked colors with orignal picture ? Seems nice, but i miss more sharp, big aperture didnt help probably-f/2.8. Some (probably) mistake is annoted and one burnt pixel of left seide of cupola. --Mile (talk) 11:01, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for reviewing so detailed. I try to respond step by step:
- Colours: I am always using reference slides with LUT for film digitalization. Here I used a Agfa Precisa CT 100 reference as colour table. So I can rule out any colour shift between slide and this image produced with my DSLR. Of course the film itself was making some shift compared to the real world in the first place. This file is looking very close to what the slide is looking like. And the image is very close to reality. You have to know that this room was built to have that kind of intense low light. I visited the "volcano" several times. And every time I am very impressed by this room. It is very dark in there. So for the first seconds you can not see any stone of that dome, just the very saturated yellow / orange glass. After a while the eyes adapt and the dome becomes visible.
- Sharpness: Yes it was partially intentional. I tried to focus on the glass, more than onto the dome. Additionally it is a compromise for exposure time, because the tripod was not installable as stable as one would wish to. The is a statue below, and the tripod has to stand one one foot to not touch the statue.
- The "strange black line" is a scratch at the film produced while processing. The "burnt pixel" is not a pixel but a film corn which somehow developed wrong. I will retouch both errors today.

- Thank you for reviewing so detailed. I try to respond step by step:
- Done August (talk) 15:45, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- @ August Got it. Looking at this, i think you could put cupola in upper third with some crop (as shown), what would i do, maybe as Alternative. Do you know what Dmax you have from this type of scan ? --Mile (talk) 08:50, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- I see your point. It sounds like a good idea. I tried it in several ways. To get the maximum two thirds look out of it, I have to cut off very much content and can not win some new in the bright right part. This would waste too much detail of the still limited film information. I think the image just was not composed for that approach in the first place. August (talk) 09:04, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support True, i would be scared to crop film photo. Feeling some strange. So should cover best compo at begining and to further. Somehow plused. --Mile (talk) 09:48, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support This photo is a piece of art in many ways, not only because of the weather at that time and place, but also the technique used, the camera used, it is a look at the past and the present. I am really a big fan of your work. There is no way to compare the other nominations with this kind of photography. --Wilfredor (talk) 19:31, 7 August 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose 6 FPs at once is a lot of FPs. Quality is good but right now I don't see what makes this pulpit special. It lacks wow to me and I couldn't find on the Internet anything special about it. Poco a poco (talk) 17:38, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Info Not the pulpit itself, but the church, where it is located. St. Genesius (Riedböhringen) is the burial church of cardinal Augustin Bea, one of the most important personalities of the Second Vatican Council and personal confessor of Pope Pius XII. -- Llez (talk) 18:34, 6 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose First and last pictures are not extraordinary, in my opinion. Unexceptional angles of view, distorsions in the first case, yellowish interior light. The four statues also seem quite repetitive. When opened individually, each image has limited wow factor, I think. The last one, if nominated alone, would certainly fail, due to the composition. Thus the only reason to be part of this set seems to show the stairs, which are not really special, sorry -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:57, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- Info 1.) It is not a yellowish light, but the walls are slightly beige. You can check it by comparing them with the white tablecloth in the left picture. 2.) The reason was not to show the stairs, but it was, in connection with the first picture, the only way to show the position of the four evangelists at the pulpit. --Llez (talk) 09:06, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- In a set, each picture should be FP-level, and not only "in connection with" the others. That angle, with the angel from behind, numerous busy elements, uneven ground, and shadows, is particularly unappealing -- Basile Morin (talk) 05:30, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

The hadada ibis, that occurs throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, is a large ibis (about 76 centimetres (30 in)) with a mean body mass of 1.2 kilograms (2.6 lb). It is named for its loud three to four note calls uttered in flight especially in the mornings and evenings when they fly out or return to their roost trees. - I would like to point out that I didn't personnally nominate the ghillie suit picture and that this kind of comment is one of the reasons why I would probably never have nominated it myself. That being said, I see no problem with users nominating pictures of themselves, especially if it is a good and useful picture like the present candidate -- Giles Laurent (talk) 03:57, 8 August 2024 (UTC)

- Comment Converting master images (i.e., versions of what Wikimedia Commons uses as source images when scaling) from lossless images to lossy compression is a bad idea as it degrades the image quality. Also, Wikimedia Commons does a good enough transparent conversion from TIFF to JPEG on the fly that there is no need for manual conversions for general use just to get a JPEG version of the file. --Zache (talk) 23:16, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Weak support A JPG version is a standard format that has the advantage of a low weigh. It is also easy to download, and to display in many softwares and browsers. - Oppose Original photo is here. It is a famous photograph, part of the "Finnish Heritage Agency". You can't change the appearance of a widespread cover of magazine Eeva, and pretend the author is the photographer Seppo Konstig with such a fancy effect as this white gradient all around. Many photographers don't like this nebulous, cloudy style, and it would be misleading to believe that the photographer chose this appearance for that portrait. You can modify the photos that belong to you as much as you want, but for the significant photos that are anchored in history, it seems essential to me to respect the original source, even if it is not to the taste of all the participants from Wikimedia in 2024. Imagine Che Guevara, or Louis Armstrong with a similar white cloud outline, it would be ridiculous to promote such a version.
