Disk-shaped nebula formed by the winds of the type Wolf-Rayet star WR 134. This blue nebula is embedded within an interstellar region rich in gas and dust clouds in the constellation Cygnus.
  • Usually no mountains required for astrophotography (not many of those in Hamois, Belgium where this is taken), just absence of too much disturbing light or air pollution. When I do aurora photos, I just load my stuff in a shopping caddy and head out to a field near a nature reserve or down to the shore of the fjord. --Cart (talk) 12:47, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I remember climbing a 5,000 meter peak (Bolivar) for 8 days to take some photos of the stars, but we arrived at the top so tired that we fell asleep in a tent, I remember that taking a step there is like running in a football stadium, my heart beats very fast, but in the middle of the night I woke up to a windless night with incredible clarity, when I saw the sky that night it was so beautiful that I simply began to cry perhaps also affected by the lack of oxygen, I could not think rationally and take the photos properly, but I remember that the sky there is completely different, the stars are brighter and you can see the shapes of the constellations, it is very different from the sky we see.1 2 3 Wilfredor (talk) 13:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I prefer my caddy. :-) Thankfully, we are blessed with clean and clear air here. Btw, remember we have the Perseids this weekend. Fingers crossed for no clouds! --Cart (talk) 14:21, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We hope we can have a clear day here too, it's best to get away from the city (if possible) to avoid all that light pollution. Wilfredor (talk) 15:42, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do my astrophotography right from my home terrace. I can even catch some sleep during the night while my equipment snaps away automatically ;)

I don't think it is clever to renominate again and again the same FPCs that get 5 supports or 6 supports, until you get the 7. If a picture gets lack of participation, it is usually an indicator of moderate or low wow. Then it's better to try a different candidate. Otherwise you will exhaust the participants with repetitive visuals. And we will support only to get rid of these patterns. Apart from that, this image is of low quality, in my opinion, even for the period.

and Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:HabitanteComunidadQoM(CDI-CA-MM-00005)-restored.jpg -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:59, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With all respect, Basile, if I had done it, you'd have every right to complain, but I didn't renominate it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 21:15, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Low quality for 1890? This can be explained in part due to the process of "whitening" Machado de Assis (many photographers at the time perhaps did not want to show the fact that the country's greatest writer was pardo/black). 21:32, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I worked very hard to try and get the skin tone as close to correct as I could with this image. I found a report calling him a "light-skinned mestizo" - I believe the term is much more acceptable in South America - so I'm not sure what's perfect, but I did my best. Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:54, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The jacket is ok but not the face -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:47, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With all respect, Adam, you're not responsible. But ArionStar had been warned several times in the past, with quite clear messages. I understand this is your picture and want it promoted, since you nominated it the first time. But both of you had voted already last week. So what do you expect? Many of us may get tired with such repetitive tasks, if it gets a norm. Let's maintain FPC as an enthusiastic and emulative voting place instead, with diversity.
If a picture fails, no problem, just accept the consensus and try something better! See the list of similar candidatures which didn't pass last month, only because one or two votes were missing:
score 5-0, score 6-0, score 5-0, score 7-4, score 13-7, score 7-4, score 5-2, score 6-1, score 5-2, score 6-0, score 5-3, score 5-0. Imagine all of them nominated for a second round, hell :-) "Okay, bad luck, I'll try again next week" :-)
We had related discussions in previous nominations and the FP talk page, and I remember most of the people consider we have to wait a relatively long period of time before renominating a picture, unless there are modifications made since the last time. Which is not the case here. Best regards -- Basile Morin (talk) 01:52, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Can you show that discussion? 01:57, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Eagle Nebula from ESO.jpg/2. Just read the comments -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:18, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is similar to Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Couillet - chevalements de la mine du Pêchon - 7.jpg/2 also nominated by the same user ArionEstar = ArionStar = ★ with the reason "Per 6 supports × 0 opposes.". This result may impact the voting process in the future. Adam Cuerden is certainly aware of this "tacit rule" since he made this suggestion in the FPC talk page in 2019 . @Ikan Kekek: proposed to wait at least 12 months here. Like Daniel Case's procedural oppose, many participants agree. What others think? -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:28, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see the issue. Yann (talk) 06:00, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, i was too late to notice the previous nomination and did not have time to vote in support first nomination. This renomination corrects my oversight, and i do not see a serious problem with the renomination. -- George Chernilevsky talk 06:33, 10 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Comment Question: how close to original colors did you come with scan with DSLR. The other is you scaned developed film and checked colors with orignal picture ? Seems nice, but i miss more sharp, big aperture didnt help probably-f/2.8. Some (probably) mistake is annoted and one burnt pixel of left seide of cupola. --Mile (talk) 11:01, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for reviewing so detailed. I try to respond step by step:
    • Colours: I am always using reference slides with LUT for film digitalization. Here I used a Agfa Precisa CT 100 reference as colour table. So I can rule out any colour shift between slide and this image produced with my DSLR. Of course the film itself was making some shift compared to the real world in the first place. This file is looking very close to what the slide is looking like. And the image is very close to reality. You have to know that this room was built to have that kind of intense low light. I visited the "volcano" several times. And every time I am very impressed by this room. It is very dark in there. So for the first seconds you can not see any stone of that dome, just the very saturated yellow / orange glass. After a while the eyes adapt and the dome becomes visible.
    • Sharpness: Yes it was partially intentional. I tried to focus on the glass, more than onto the dome. Additionally it is a compromise for exposure time, because the tripod was not installable as stable as one would wish to. The is a statue below, and the tripod has to stand one one foot to not touch the statue.
    • The "strange black line" is a scratch at the film produced while processing. The "burnt pixel" is not a pixel but a film corn which somehow developed wrong. I will retouch both errors today.
    August (talk) 13:38, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • @ August Got it. Looking at this, i think you could put cupola in upper third with some crop (as shown), what would i do, maybe as Alternative. Do you know what Dmax you have from this type of scan ? --Mile (talk) 08:50, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I see your point. It sounds like a good idea. I tried it in several ways. To get the maximum two thirds look out of it, I have to cut off very much content and can not win some new in the bright right part. This would waste too much detail of the still limited film information. I think the image just was not composed for that approach in the first place. August (talk) 09:04, 9 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose First and last pictures are not extraordinary, in my opinion. Unexceptional angles of view, distorsions in the first case, yellowish interior light. The four statues also seem quite repetitive. When opened individually, each image has limited wow factor, I think. The last one, if nominated alone, would certainly fail, due to the composition. Thus the only reason to be part of this set seems to show the stairs, which are not really special, sorry -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:57, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Info 1.) It is not a yellowish light, but the walls are slightly beige. You can check it by comparing them with the white tablecloth in the left picture. 2.) The reason was not to show the stairs, but it was, in connection with the first picture, the only way to show the position of the four evangelists at the pulpit. --Llez (talk) 09:06, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • In a set, each picture should be FP-level, and not only "in connection with" the others. That angle, with the angel from behind, numerous busy elements, uneven ground, and shadows, is particularly unappealing -- Basile Morin (talk) 05:30, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fjerning av utmerket-status

[edit]
