Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:26, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

File:EWO1920Ad2.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

EWO and Co.
[edit]Hi Philg88! My guess would be that you should move the images under fair use to en-wiki for keeping. Let me know when you are done, I'll delete the media here. Sorry, I really like that advertising. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 21:07, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Hedwig in Washington. Yes, these adverts are really cool and perfectly reflect the spirit of the age. Since EWO Brewery ceased to exist sometime in the 1950s I would argue that copyright in the images vanished with it. That said, I'm happy to move all related files to en.wikipedia but, (blushes) I don't know how to do that. Best, Philg88 (talk) 06:58, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- There's no tool for that. At least as far as I know. I'd just download from here and upload on en. I think I print one out before you move them. Fair use, of course. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 07:05, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
I had a quick look at the en.wikipedia user page of the individual who requested the speedy delete. I quote another editor's comment: "I appreciate your enthusiasm but looking through your recent edits, your nominations for deletion still give me pause and you AfD's are creating a lot of unnecessary work for the community." On reflection, I think the files should stay on commons. Is there a Wikimedia person who can give an opinion as to what happens to a company's copyright on its dissolution where there is no successor in law? Best, Philg88 (talk) 07:27, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- Sure. You can do two things: Ask at the Village Pump or nominate all files for deletion and see what happens. I'd go with the village pump. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 15:55, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Sound advice. Pump duly primed. Philg88 (talk) 18:49, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Warring States of China Image
[edit]Hello Philg88,
I work for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, and we are planning on using the following image for a video for our Terra Cotta Warriors Exhibit:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EN-WarringStatesAll260BCE.jpg
In the attribution of the image, should I attribute to you or Benjamin Trovato? I was planning on attributing to you, but I wanted to clarify, in case anything else was needed.
Thank you!
B johnst (talk) 14:52, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi there, You're welcome to use that map and if you like I can upload an alternative format (PNG or similar). The file was uploaded by Benjamin Trovato because at the time I was in China and unable to upload anything and he kindly stepped in. If you want to email me instead of posting here you can do that via my Wikipedia email here. Best Regards, Philg88 (talk) 17:15, 8 October 2013 (UTC)
File:Soma mine fire 2014 diagram EN.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

State of Qin map: base map cartography question
[edit]Philg88, thanks for making this series of maps available (I see above that the Warring States version has been used elsewhere):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EN-QIN260BCE.jpg
My question is what the underlying China base map came from? Any information (projection, source, etc.) would be helpful, I'd like to georeference some points on it from pixels into latitude/longitude. Thanks, Aldebrn (talk) 02:32, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Aldebrn and thanks for the message. This map may be of use and it also has lat/lon markers. What you see to the south west marked as SHU RA is the State of Qin. If I was doing these again now I would use SVG and cross reference that with data from OpenStreetMap or USGS. Alas, I have a lot on my plate these days so I won't have time. Good luck with the map! Philg88 (talk) 05:15, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry for the awfully-delayed reply. Thanks for the clarification! Could you describe where the underlying basemap came from, i.e., the outline of the coast and the paths of the rivers? I’m interested in nailing down the cartographic projection and its parameters. Thanks again! Aldebrn (talk) 02:19, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hi again Aldebrn. Sorry, but I've moved half way around the world since that map was created and I no longer have access to some resources. It likely came from an old (i.e. PD) Chinese source, but I don't recall which one.
- Best, Philg88 (talk) 04:14, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians
[edit]I see you updated the map you kindly created for this article. In case you did not notice, Æthelred was Today's Featured Article on 3 August. Dudley Miles (talk) 08:26, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Dudley Miles: Thanks for the tip off :) Cheers, Philg88 (talk) 09:17, 6 August 2014 (UTC)

File:Qing Empire circa 1820 EN.svg requires updating
[edit]Hi Philg88,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Qing Empire circa 1820 EN.svg is out of date. The eastern coast of Taiwan was never under the sovereignty of the Qing Empire. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 00:35, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
Unusual Juxtaposition of Traditional and Simplified Chinese Characters
[edit]Hey, FYI, this map's Chinese character title has both simplified and traditional Chinese characters in it. That's strange. Geographyinitiative (talk) 21:04, 4 August 2022 (UTC)
