Charles Henri Victor Noirot (* 16. Juli 1922 im 14. Stadtbezirk von Paris;[1] † 23. September 2010 in Dijon[2]) war ein französischer Entomologe von internationalem Ruf und weltweiter Spezialist für Termiten. Er war Professor an der Fakultät für Naturwissenschaften von Dijon[3] und bis zum hohen Alter von über 80 Jahren im dortigen zoologischen Labor tätig.[4]

Leben und Wirken

Charles Noirot wurde in einer Familie mit Wurzeln im Jura geboren.[5] Er war der Sohn des Postboten Victor Noirot und dessen Ehefrau, geborene Aline Barbe. Charles Noirot heiratete am 21. Februar 1955 Cécile Noirot-Timothée. Aus dieser Ehe ging der gemeinsame Sohn Olivier Noirot hervor.[1] Charles Noirot besuchte das Pariser Gymnasium Lycée Louis-le-Grand, seine Begeisterung für die Natur veranlasste ihn, danach Biologie an der Fakultät für Naturwissenschaften der Sorbonne in Paris zu studieren.[5] Dort erregte er schnell die Aufmerksamkeit seines Professors Pierre-Paul Grassé, mit dem er gemeinsam mehrere Veröffentlichungen verfasste und der ihm vorschlug, Termiten in ihrem jeweiligen Lebensraum zu untersuchen.[5]

Nach seinem Abschluss wurde Noirot zunächst an die französische Kolonie Elfenbeinküste entsandt,[5] wo er von 1946 bis 1948 eine wissenschaftliche Ausbildung im französischen kolonialen Forschungsbüro des französischen Übersee-Forschungsinstituts für Entwicklung Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-mer[1] mit Sitz in Paris[6] absolvierte. Daran anschließend folgte 1948 ein sechsmonatiger Einsatz in Algerien, Niger, Tschad, Zentralafrikanische Republik und Kamerun, sowie später – im Jahre 1958 – eine dreimonatige Expedition in das Kongo-Flussbecken (Kamerun, Kongo und Gabun).[5] Er arbeitete ab 1949 als Assistent, zwei Jahre später als Projektmanager und schließlich ab 1954 als Dozent.[1]

Im Jahre 1955 promovierte er mit einer Dissertation zum Thema Forschungen zum Polymorphismus höherer Termiten (Termitidae)[7] an der Fakultät für Naturwissenschaften der Universität Paris zum Doktor der Naturwissenschaften.[1] Dieselbe Fakultät war auch der Schauplatz seiner ersten Lehrtätigkeit:[5] Dort nahm er im Jahre 1957 eine Professur an.[1] Später engagierte er sich erneut in Afrika und war ab 1959 Direktor[1] des erst ein Jahr zuvor gegründeten abidjanischen Hochschulzentrums Centre d’Enseignement Supérieur d’Abidjan (Elfenbeinküste), an dessen Gründung er maßgeblich beteiligt war.[5] Dieses Zentrum, das er bis 1963 leitete,[5] wurde zum Kern der späteren Universität Félix Houphouët-Boigny.[1]

Im Jahre 1964 kehrte Noirot nach Frankreich zurück, um eine akademische Laufbahn einzuschlagen: Er wurde auf den Lehrstuhl für Zoologie an der Fakultät für Naturwissenschaften in Dijon berufen,[5] wo er bis 1987 lehrte.[5] Ein Höhepunkt seiner Karriere in Dijon war die Entwicklung eines auf Insektenphysiologie spezialisierten Lehrplans.[5] Er dachte vorausschauend an die Zukunft der Biowissenschaften und schuf außerdem einen Masterstudiengang in Zell- und Molekularbiologie, um die nächste Generation von Studenten und Forschern vorzubereiten.[5]

Bei seinen Forschungsarbeiten wurde er stark von der Arbeit des britischen Entomologen Vincent Brian Wigglesworth beeinflusst,[5] der bedeutende Beiträge auf dem Gebiet der Insektenphysiologie leistete und als dessen Begründer gilt.[8]

Auszeichnungen

Charles Noirot trug mit dem „Orden der Akademischen Palmen“ eine hohe französische Auszeichnung und war Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.[1] Er war auch Kommandeur des nationalen Verdienstordens der Republik Elfenbeinküste.[1]

Charles Noirot hinterließ ein außergewöhnliches Erbe von mehr als 150 Publikationen über Termiten, darunter viele, die für das Verständnis dieser sozialen Insekten von entscheidender Bedeutung sind. Seine brillanten Übersichtsartikel zählen zu wesentlichen Meilensteinen der Wissenschaft in diesem speziellen Bereich der Insektenkunde.[5]

Die Veröffentlichungen seiner herausragenden wissenschaftlichen Beiträge begannen im Jahr 1945 und setzten sich bis spät in seinem Leben fort, sie endeten im Jahr 2013.
