Hillen grew up in [[Minnetonka, Minnesota|Minnetonka]], [[Minnesota]], and played youth hockey in the Hopkins Youth Hockey Association. Before entering [[Colorado College]], Hillen played high school hockey for the Academy of Holy Angels in Minnesota.
