Saint Bartholomew Church in Vrahovice

Vrahovice is a village in the Olomouc Region of the Czech Republic, near Prostějov. It is an administrative part of Prostějov. It has around 3,400 inhabitants. There is St. Bartolomew church, a post office and a few pubs.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1337. In 1370, the first church in Vrahovice was mentioned. The church burned down in 1587, during a large fire incident. Shortly after that, another church was built. It was used until 1831, when it was destroyed and replaced by a new one which was built between 1831-1836 and financed by Jan Josef count Seilern, the possessor of the Kralice domain.

Near Vrahovice, another village called Trpenovice (nowadays Trpinky) was situated. In 1466 it was connected to Vrahovice. Currently it is still part of Vrahovice. Between 1960-1973, the village of Čechůvky was a part of Vrahovice.

It past Vrahovice was owned by many possessors. The last one was Seilerns. In 1725 Jan Bedřich Seilern bought Vrahovice.

In 1848, Vrahovice had its first mayor - Jan Frébort. The largest development occurred in the inter-war era, when Josef Stříž was the mayor. At that time, a road to Prostějov and Vrbátky and city hall were built. During the World War II, Nazi occupators built observation point on the hill above Vrahovice. They controlled situation in the railway from this point. After World War II, there was an internment camp in the village, intended for Germans from Prostějov region waiting for the transfer to Germany. Between 1950 and 1954 and since 1973 Vrahovice is a part of Prostějov. Nowadays, there are voices of disjunction.

On 9 December 2004, a railway accident occurred in Vrahovice. A lorry with soldiers crashed into a train. Nine people died.

Important natives and compatriots

The musicians Zdeněk Tylšar and Bedřich Tylšar were born in the village and the linguist Dr. František Kopečný lived there for many years. Football player Rostislav Václavíček has born in Vrahovice and he played football for local team at the beginning of his career.

Voluntary associations

In Vrahovice there are many clubs such as Sokol, Volunteer fire department, Spolek za staré Vrahovice etc.

Spolek za staré Vrahovice was established in 2003.[1] Since 2005 it has its clubhouse at Vrahovice railway station. Among its interests, there are local history research, environment protection, and the promotion of Vrahovice. The club arranged two exhibitions about local history and issued a postcard of Vrahovice.[2] It was engaged in the process of giving new names to streets. The streets were named after important Vrahovice compatriots - Josef Stříž, František Kopečný and Zdeněk Tylšar.[3] Nowadays, Spolek za staré Vrahovice creates a new park "Arboretum Vrahovice".[4]
