William Spence Peter (1818 – 1891) was a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council from 23 June 1868 to 23 May 1891.[1] He represented Canterbury and was from near Ashburton.[2]

Peter was born in Perthshire, Scotland, in 1818. He became a sheep farmer and emigrated to South Australia aged 19. He came to Canterbury in 1862 and settled in Anama near Ashburton, where he bred merinos. He died on 23 May 1891 at Ashburton Hospital after a short illness.[3]
