Haymarket Books is a self-described non-profit, radical book publisher and distributor. Haymarket is a project of the Center for Economic Research and Social Change (CERSC). The name of the publishing house is a reference to the 1886 Haymarket affair, an incident that began with police killing four striking workers and injuring many more, culminating in a show of working-class solidarity the next day where workers gathered to protest the police brutality against striking workers. A bomb was thrown into the crowd, injuring 67 police; in response, police open-fired into the crowd killing and injuring masses of civilians as well as police.
