Article rename request

edit

This article should, in my opinion, be renamed to the current official name of the organization: Arbor Day Foundation. I would do it myself, but the page is protected... Thanks, DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 21:57, 4 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Tree City USA

edit

Tree City USA is a campaign of the Arbor Day Foundation. The former is not clearly notable. Adding it this article might strengthen it. DA Sonnenfeld (talk) 00:04, 10 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • This page uses so many links that they begin to distract from the writing on the page. According to the Manual of Style, “Generally, a link should appear only once in an article” (see WP:MOSLINK).
  • Tree City USA is a heading in this page, but it is also its own separate page. According to the Manual of Style (MOS:SECTIONS), “Headings should not normally contain links;” therefore, it may be more functional to limit the Tree City USA section of the Arbor Day Foundation page to a brief overview, then add any additional information to the Tree City USA page. Otherwise, it could be merged with the Tree City USA page, as has been previously suggested.
  • While I could not find this explicitly stated in the MOS, based on other Wikipedia articles, section headings do not need to be bolded throughout the page.
  • It is important to check through phrasing to ensure this page does not start to sound like an advertisement. Some of the current phrasing pushes that boundary, we need to make sure this stays sounding neutral.

The major updates that have been recently added to the page will help this page a ton! It is just important that the changes match the accepted Wikipedia style.

I have taken out most of the links. I think that Tree City USA should stay where it is on this article. I have changed the headings to conform with the Manual of Style. Also, have changed some of the wording. AAman45 (talk) 02:40, 18 November 2015 (UTC)AAman45Reply

Improvements

edit

Hi!

I just skimmed through this page again, I really like what has been improved. Foundations on Wiki often have very little attention, the upgrade this page just received would definitely pull more views. A few tweaks I would like to see is a Background or History section. There is an in-depth intro which could be either a) further elaborated or b)summarized and moved into a History section. An intro is suppose to be representative of all the contents on the page. Ideas or information deserve their own space, don't squeeze them all into one lead. Another really nice section to add would be Motivation or Goal. The page only has one Program section and several subsections, the contents look good but it would much better to have more information other than programs.

The Arbor Day Foundation is based on it's programs. They need to be the feature of the article. AAman45 (talk) 02:34, 18 November 2015 (UTC)AAman45Reply

"Arbor Day—the tree planter's holiday—was founded in 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska, by J. Sterling Morton. He and his wife Caroline, on their 72- acre estate, Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum, began their dream to challenge people around the country to plant much-needed trees. On the first Arbor Day in 1872, approximately one million trees were planted in Nebraska alone.[3]"

This is a good example of subtly non-neutral writing. The sentence structure itself is too chummy. The little subordinated clause offset by long dashes that makes a definitive claim about a nickname; it's just too close. More straightforward would be: In 1872 J. Sterling Morgan started what would become Arbor Day in Nebraska City. This "holiday" is meant to recognize and support the planting of trees. [it's a different sort of holiday from Christmas, or Thanksgiving--more like Mother's Day, or Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day] It's also confusing time wise--how could their estate already be the "Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and Arboretum" when they hadn't even started Arbor Day yet? These are all issues that, through research and self awareness, you should be able to amend even if you are drawing on and closely related to the Foundation. Daclausen (talk) 16:05, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the comment. I did amend the sentence and paragraph.

Furthermore, there is actually a lot of controversy about the claim that trees are "much needed" in Nebraska. They are nonnative after all. They are weeds. The whole idea of "agroforestry" has a good deal of criticism. This is where a need for more research is quite clear. Daclausen (talk) 16:05, 11 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

This phrase was taken out. Too much controversy and too many opinions. There are absolutely native trees in each state. This article is about the Arbor Day Foundation and what they do. AAman45 (talk) 02:38, 18 November 2015 (UTC)AAman45Reply

Some stuff to use: If you can get your hands on these books:

  • Arbor day, its history, observation, spirit and significance / with practical selections on tree-planting and conservation, and a nature anthology, ed. by Robert Haven Schauffler - Schauffler, Robert Haven, 1879-1964, ed
  • Arbor Day : a Nebraska creation

I think that this article has certianly grown from when I first read it. The article was certainly factual and mutual, my biggest critique would be to maybe find some secondary sources as most of yours are from the arbor day foundation. I like how there was plenty of external links in your article, it gives it more credibility. - eo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eodhiambo (talkcontribs) 17:37, 7 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Carly Cardinal

edit

The Carly Cardinal mascot does not seem to warrant its own article. Could it be merged into Arbor Day Foundation? Jmertel23 (talk) 18:24, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
