Jack P. Maddex, Jr., in his biography of Pollard, The Reconstruction of Edward A. Pollard: A Rebel's Conversion to Postbellum Unionism (Chapel Hill: U. of N.C. Press, 1974) gives Pollard's birthdate as 27 Feb 1832 (p.4), and gives the following citation: Alexander Brown, The Cabells and Their Kin: A Memorial Volume of History, Biography, and Genealogy (Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1895), 219, 406-7, 433-34; Michael Houston, "Edward A. Pollard and the Richmond Examiner: A Study of Journalistic Opposition in Wartime" (M.A. thesis, American University, 1963), pp. 27-30. To Houston's reasons for dating Pollard's birth in 1832, one may add his age as given in U.S. Census Manuscripts, Schedule 1: Population, Lynch Ward, City of Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia, 1870, p.56. —LonelyPilgrim02:17, 27 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pollard was never in the United States military and was in fact in active opposition to it during the height of his career; why is he included in categories implying that he was a member or somehow related to it rather than an enemy of it?

I cleaned up this article somewhat while waiting for the Patch Tuesday updates to download and install, but of course was unable to consult the biography cited.I believe a book about the Rives family has been published in the last couple of years, and that it explains some of the complexities of their stances concerning the Confederacy and slavery, but haven't read it.Jweaver28 (talk) 19:41, 10 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
