Hi, got a user adding misinformation
editOn the Monsterverse page, they keep removing names of confirmed known characters and adding a confirmed nonexistent character to the entry for Godzilla King of the Monsters. just want some help keeping information accurate there. Lindenhs (talk) 23:19, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

- Trying to get a public one but I regularly talk with people officially involved with the MV, the characters that keep getting removed were confirmed onscreen in multiple films and by Legendary a few times.
- The nonexistent character is Sargon who has never been seen or referenced ever and was confirmed by the comic/novel writer for the MV Greg Keyes not to exist in a private chat I got permission to share. Here:

- I am aware this isn’t the ideal way to do it, and as said I’m trying to get a more public statement from them. However the evidence is there as all other Titans in KOTM have on screen sources unless they are novel or comic exclusives.

- @Lindenhs Well I certainly applaud your networking skills for connecting with Mr. Keyes. But a text chat is what we call original research, which is generally disallowed. The issue is it has no publisher, so a reader can't easily verify if its true for themselves. But the Newsweek article at [1] does mention Sargon. Now, there might be a nuance here that I'm missing, perhaps there's a reason why its included in the Newsweek article that could be clarified in our article? - It was a joke on Bloody Disgusting that Newsweek copy pasted.
- the joke was “Titanus Sargon in Mexico” as a reference to Sargon of Akkad aka Carl Benjamin a racist/sexist YouTuber and later politician who threatened to take over Mexico and was jokingly called Sargon of Mexico.
- It’s literally just that.

- I've been keeping an eye on the talk page. Things seem to be productive so far. Wikipedia follows a model called bold revert discuss. We want people to be bold and change and improve the encyclopedia. But if someone makes a change, and someone else disagrees with it, the change can be reverted. The person who made the change in the first place is not entitled to revert that reversion. Instead, the article stays in the status quo ante version, while both parties discuss the merits of the issue. You're currently in the merits of the issue portion of the discussion. You should keep engaging on the talk page. While your claim appears to have some merit as to the missing characters, the other editor is pointing out that you'll need a better source to prove that Sargon isn't in the monsterverse. Please don't change the text of the article until you've come to a conclusion on the talk page. If you reach an impasse let me know and we can go from there. - I sent some links on the talk page directly from the film… but if trying to update information to be up to date with information that’s been available for 10 years now and debunks those old articles is apparently a ban offense I don’t see the point.

- We also don’t allow it, but I did try talking it out and sent multiple sources, screenshots, etc but they didn’t listen.

- the information on these characters is available from legendary on twitter (which I don’t have so can’t provide links) and Instagram, as well as official material like the novels and comics.

@Lindenhs I think part of the issue here is that there are different sourcing standards for a fandom wiki vs. Wikipedia. Fandom wikis often heavily draw from the source material, as a primary source. But Wikipedia has a generally strong aversion to relying on the source material. Instead, we rely on secondary sources, i.e. sources that have talked about the original source. So we're not going to rely on what authors themselves are saying about their work. Nor are we really dedicated to that level of fandom detail. That's why fandom wikis exist: they go into much greater detail than we do, and are full of cool and dedicated fans who pore over the source material to keep things accurate. But that sort of original research is just not what we do on Wikipedia. We say what the secondary sources say. CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n!⚓ 06:37, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

- Which is very expensive because there's like a dozen of them. That reminds me of a joke: Five Wikipedia arbitrators go out to dinner. The server asks, "What are you having?" The first arb says they'll wait to order until they hear what everyone else is ordering. The second arb says they'll wait to order to give time for the kitchen staff to make recommendations. The third arb says they're leaning towards the chicken, but they want to hear what the chicken has to say first. The fourth arb suggests skipping the orders and just paying the bill. - @Mariashafferg The process being used here is called a WP:PROD, which is a sort of easy to oppose deletion process, which can be undone by anyone for any reason. I have thus unprodded it. There is now a chance that the article could be put up for formal deletion, which is WP:AFD. If it is put up for more formal deletion, let me know and I can guide you through the process.
