Non-free image use

Each use of a non-free file is required to satisfy all ten non-free content use criteria listed in WP:NFCCP. If you wish to use these files in the "Northeast India" article, then it is your responsibility to show how they satisfy all of these criteria by providing a seperate specific non-free use rationale explaining how. However, simply providing a rationale in and of itself is not a justification for non-free use as explained in WP:JUSTONE; all of the non-free use criteria need to be met. As the files were being used in the article, there is almost no chance of them meeting WP:NFTABLES, WP:NFCC#1 and WP:NFCC#8. You can ask for other opinions if you like ask at WP:MCQ, WT:NFC or WP:FFD, but this type of non-free use is almost always never allowed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:04, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

@user:Marchjuly What do you really mean by "this type"? Which out of 10 are you really referring to? Because I see no violation anywhere. Northeast India is both a geographic and political division of India. So when we are talking about political regions, I think it is justified to denote them with their emblem. There cannot be alternatives to these images, and the files are being used on the government sites (for example, http://www.arunachalpradesh.net.in). Also for example, when we are talking about the states of Germany, we see the state emblems alongside there. Rest of it is probably a matter of perspective whether it is deemed necessary or not. If I were to say, Brazil is not very relevant to me and therefore its emblem holds no significance and should be removed from the article, that will just be ignorance on my part. WP:OTHERIMAGE is not really a good way to try and justify non-free content use because not all images are licensed the same way and not non-free uses are equivalent; for example, all of the images used in Germany#Constituent states (File:Coat of arms of Lower Saxony.svg, File:Bremen Wappen.svg, File:Coat of arms of Hamburg.svg, File:Coat of arms of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (great).svg, File:Wappen Sachsen-Anhalt.svg, File:Coat of arms of Saxony.svg, File:Brandenburg Wappen.svg, File:Coat of arms of Thuringia.svg, File:Coat of arms of Hesse.svg, File:Coat of arms of North Rhine-Westfalia.svg, File:Coat of arms of Rhineland-Palatinate.svg, File:Arms of the Free State of Bavaria.svg, File:Coat of arms of Baden-Württemberg (lesser).svg, File:Wappen des Saarlands.svg, File:DEU Schleswig-Holstein COA.svg, and File:Country symbol of Berlin color.svg) are licensed as public domain, not as non-free content like the three files (File:Arunachal Pradesh Seal.svg, File:Manipur emblem.png, and File:Seasl of Nagaland.svg) I removed from Northeast India#State Symbols. Public domain and other freely licensed images are not subject to Wikipedia's non-free content use policy, which means they can be much more easily used on Wikipedia than non-free files.

Non-free use is not automatic and each use of a non-free file is required to comply with all ten non-free content use criteria. The three files I removed from "Northeast India" do not satisfy all ten criteria for that article because they do not have the seperate specific non-free use rationale required by WP:NFCC#10c for each use, with the key point being each use, not each file. A non-free file may be used in more than one article, but there has to be a proper justification for each use. Each of the three files I removed does have a non-free use rationale for their respective uses in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland, but they don't have the required rationale for their uses in "Northeast India"; therefore, they were removed from the latter per WP:NFCCE. Now, if you feel that their non-free uses in "Northeast India" is justified, then it is your responsibility to provide each file with a seperate non-free use rationale specific to that particular use. However, this type of non-free use (in other words, decorative use in tables where the file is simply shown, but is not itself the subject of sourced critical commentary) almost always lacks the context required by WP:NFCC#8 and is almost never allowed per WP:NFTABLES. This is a fairly established consesus based on discussions of similar file usage at WT:NFC or WP:FFD.

Of course, there is typically an exception to every rule, so (once again) if you really feel that the way you want to use those three files in "Northeast India" is one such exception, then please provide the required rationales for each file's use explaining why. I suggest, however, that it probably would be a good idea for you to ask about this at WT:NFC or even WP:MCQ first in you disagee with my assessment, and seek out the opinions of others because simply adding a rationale for a particular use does not automatically mean all ten criteria are satisfied as explained in WP:JUSTONE and further discussion may be needed at WP:FFD to see if a consensus can be established supporting the non-free use of those files in "Northeast India".

Hi Renzut. One of the features of non-free images is that we try to use them as little as possible. This is minimal use. So we ask the question as to whether the image is really needed to understand the topic or not. If there was a non-free emblem for Northeast India, it would make sense to illustrate it. But for the component states, just giving their name and a link to their articles will do. Then people can see the emblems and flags on the state pages. your revision of my change in Northeast India article

Hi Reznut. There seems to be some confusion here. The only thing I changed in the article (as far as I can remember) was to make two words plural. I did so because the grammar of the English language calls for this. But in your reversion of my changes you wrote something about classical Indian dances. My change was in the sentence ending: "and is one of the largest salient (panhandle) in the world." I changed this to plural: "and is one of the largest salients (panhandles) in the world." As you know, phrases such as "one of the (largest/ smallest/ etc.) ** in the world" normally go with the missing word in plural in English. You would not say "It is one of the most beautiful place I've ever seen", or "He is one of the smartest person in the world", right? You would say, "It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen" or "He is one of the smartest people in the world." Plural. ;) --Catgirl (talk) 19:12, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
