In need of your mentorship

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning a WikiProject I've been coordinating. Here's the situation:

The project is WP:WPOOK. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia. I also run a team of 5 advanced wiki-editors – the team communicates via user talk page posts. We use a variety of tools such as AWB, bots, Linky, etc. to execute tasks on batches of hundreds of pages at a time. Three of the team's members are admins, and 2 of the members have bot accounts. The team works on tasks that I assign, on the OOK and also on problems that the OOK has revealed in the encyclopedia-at-large (reverse outlines are good at that) – we've worked on things as diverse as creating country demonym disambiguation pages, to cleaning up the CIA World Factbook data on country "Demographics of" pages, to renaming "Cuisine of" articles to their demonymic form, to organizing the "Index of x articles" pages, etc. I also send out a newsletter or project update to the team, to the WikiProject members, and to anybody else who has been involved or who has expressed interest (20 to 30 Wikipedians).

So you see, we can implement just about any strategy. But we need more strategies. Your ideas on the following would be greatly appreciated...

The goals of the WikiProject are:

  1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
  2. Complete the existing outlines
  3. Create an outline for every subject that is exensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
  4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
  5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
  6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
  7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

We've posted over a thousand banners and notices so far, which resulted in just a couple complaints – one complainer posted at WT:WPOOK & WP:AN & WP:VPP and the other posted at WP:VPR. Not a bad negative feedback level for such a large posting. The complaints went nowhere, as several users came forward in defense of outlines.

I've proposed a 200-Wikiproject contest at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries, and I had notices posted on the talk pages of all the corresponding country WikiProjects' talk pages.

I've created some pointers for developing outlines to guide editors through the process of building outline pages, because once many editors are attracted, I won't be able to instruct them one-on-one. I've also been working on a new article for the subject, since the current article is very lacking.

I was hoping you could comment on how to achieve the goals above.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Can you recommend anyone in particular who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this? Or ways to reach groups of editors? Or ways to reach all editors? I welcome any and all advice you might have.

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

The Military history WikiProject Newsletter Issue XXXIX (May 2009)
From the coordinators
  • With end of year exams beckoning for many members, this has been a quiet month on the talk pages for Milhist. (If you are facing exams yourself, we all wish you the very best of luck!) During this quieter period, some of our most active reviewers are busy revising so it would be really appreciated if you can help with peer reviews or A-Class reviews. You can easily track articles needing review, by copying {{WPMILHIST Review alerts}} to your userpage.
  • This month sees our first newsletter editorial. The idea is to provide regular tips and hints to help editors get up to speed with our large (and sometimes complicated) project. This month's piece, by EyeSerene, explains the workings of the project's main template, which is at the core of the project's tagging and assessing activities.  Roger Davies talk 20:26, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Editorial: "How to use the Milhist template"

Welcome to a new occasional feature of The Bugle, where over coming issues we'll be exploring some of the roles, tasks, and technical functions that go into creating what archivist and researcher Simon Fowler has described as the best general resource for military history on the internet. As a project we can rightly be proud of that accolade, and we gratefully acknowledge the debt we owe to those dedicated editors from across Wikipedia that have helped to make the Military history WikiProject what it is today.

Many editors' first inkling of milhist's existence is when they spot our project banner on an article talk page. The banner can be easily added to appropriate articles by any editor, by typing {{WPMILHIST}} at (or near) the top of the talk page on a new line, and saving the page with an appropriate edit summary. This short form of the template will add the article to our project, and also flag the article as needing assessment and assignment to a task force by automatically adding it to the unassessed articles and articles with no associated task force categories.

As with many templates in use on Wikipedia, additional parameters can be specified. Possibly the most useful to include is the class parameter, because this will help out any editors who come along later to assess the article. To add the class parameter, edit the template markup to look like {{WPMILHIST|class=}}... and if you wish, have a read through the assessment guidance on milhists's quality scale and assign a rating from Stub- to B-Class yourself. A banner template with, for example, a Stub-Class article rating will look like {{WPMILHIST|class=stub}}. Because B-Class is assessed against a checklist it has some additional parameters, so when adding the project banner to an article talk-page, even if you don't intend to assess the article yourself it can be a real help to subsequent editors to include these too. This version of the template can be entered as {{WPMILHIST|class=|B1=|B2=|B3=|B4=|B5=}}. For detailed guidance on exactly what the five B-Class criteria are, see the B-class checklist.

Finally, when adding the milhist banner it's useful to assign the article to one (or more) of our task forces. This will help to bring it to the attention of those editors most likely to be interested in, and knowledgeable about, the subject. As with assessment, task force assignment is accomplished by adding a parameter to the template—in this case, simply the name of the task force followed by =yes (or =y). For example, to assign a Start-Class article to the Second World War and Canadian task forces, the template should read {{WPMILHIST|class=start|B1=|B2=|B3=|B4=|B5=|WWII=yes|Canadian=yes}}.

For a full list of all the banner template parameters and more detailed usage instructions, see Template:WPMILHIST; if you are unsure as to whether or not an article belongs with milhist or what task force(s) might be appropriate, or if you have any other questions, you are welcome to ask at our main project talk page. Happy templating! EyeSerenetalk

Re: your edit summary

In this edit you removed craigslist saying it's "controversial to be there". May I ask why? -- œ 02:02, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

With all these Craigslist controversies and illegal activities by users, I felt it is inappropriate to 'promote' it in WP. Just my opinion. feel free to revert it if really think otherwise. -- Tinu Cherian 02:11, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I see. Okay I'm gonna go ahead and revert because none of those events in that article have anything to do with Wikipedia. It's not inappropriate, it's helpful for local Wikipedians to connect with each other. Craigslist is a wonderful resource if used properly. Also I don't think NPOV policy applies to most project namespace pages, especially WP:MEET, which is meant to be a promotion, and it's a helpful suggestion. Regards, œ 02:19, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey

Hey, I noticed that the GOG guy has been giving trouble on the India pages to advance his own beliefs and cause, and does not seem to be listening to any of the other editors about OR or SYN. If I could make a suggestion, maybe his english skills might not be that good for the more complicated rules like that. Maybe you could have a editor who knows the official language of Goa (Kokani I think) try explaining it to him. Just a suggestion. Deavenger (talk) 19:02, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Seriously by the language GoG uses, I dont underestimate his english skills. Deepak D'Souza (talk · contribs · count) is a konkani AFAIK. but even he rejected the idea at Wikipedia talk:INB#Inclusion of other territories of India. I will leave him a note this discussion -- Tinu Cherian 18:05, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I really wish I could be as nice as you guys are. But sorry, Im a little low on patience.Language isn't really a problem here. Anyway I could only be of limited help as I am not schooled in Konkani, just speak the home edition. The dialect would be annother issue. Anyway our ganvkaar seems to know enough English to find his way around the wiki-maze on his own [1] , [2] :-). And maybe I am a bit paranoid, but this guy has also learned to put his socks: [3].
The problem as I see it is this: our ganvkaar is a young, idealistic, hot-blooded, chap who is concerned about the decline in the communidade system, possibly a member of the priviledged class who is no longer receiving his priviledges. He has read bits and pieces about the UN, Goa's history, international law and somehow come to the crazy conclusion that the state has no authority over any privately held land if it was established after the land came into private ownership. Parts of his theory are picked from those who were opposed to India's millitary invasion of Goa. Im sorry but 10 different people have tried talking nicely to him and it hasn't made a bit of difference. I doubt I will be able to even if I try to talk to him in Konkani. --Deepak D'Souza 18:37, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your valuable comments, Deepak. I am feeling a bit guilty of being a bit rude to him due to my ignorance of history of Goa. Thatz why I also wanted a re-think. -- Tinu Cherian 09:20, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Don't feel guilty about it, Tinu. Your behaviour, if it can be called rude, was a natural response to his behaviour. He will be one of thousands of such editors who will come, make a big drama and dissapear. Probably, I am more disappointed about how GoG turned out than you. We have very few native Goan editors on who are active and there is a lot of work to be done. I was hoping that with a dozen odd editors trying to talk sense to him he would see that he was mistaken, but well... . IMHO, Wikipedia can do with lesser but sincere editors rather than people who merely waste other people's time. Let see if he comes back and shows a willingness to work within the rules. Then Ill surely help him out. --Deepak D'Souza 12:53, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

WP Biography

Hi. I noticed that back in May you added WPBiography banner in hundreds of articles. I would like to comment that Wikiproject biography is not dealing with companied such as this one and that usually gods are part of Wikiproject Mythology or Wikiproject Religion and not Biography. I jope that you are more careful in the future that that you can help us remove some misplaced banners. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 23:50, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know this. I have corrected most of my mistakes related to BIO tagging. This happened mainly because the article was placed in Category:Indian architects ( which you had removed now ) which is primarly a BIO category. This is also a wrong category I had removed from the same article. I was more interested in tagging india related articles for {{WP India}} and thought of tagging Category:Indian people for Wikiproject biography also ( i have stopped wp:biography tagging now) I 've tagged thousands of articles for various Wikiprojects till now and usually tag articles for projects with extreme care ( that is why i use manual save with my account these days, instead of bot flagged/auto save account with my AWB bot and yea some mistakes did happen sometimes. Thanks again. Apologies for the inconvenience -- Tinu Cherian 04:50, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Not An Attack

That was not an attack, it was a reply to misinformation being spread by Satanoid/Morbid Fairy. He seems to "canvass" all and sundry and accuse me and Sineed of being "Extremists". Before you warn me, warn him about his behaviour. Look at his history. Everyone just ignores his behaviour. Thanks --Sikh-history (talk) 07:20, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I will take a look but I have noticed your past behaviours also. Kindly be aware that we are here to build an encyclopedia. -- Tinu Cherian 07:23, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
What past behaviours? --Sikh-history (talk) 08:56, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Also noted that what I stated was NOT considered a personal attack under wikipedia guidlines. Pointing out that someone had two accounts, has been warned for WP:Outing (probably the most serious offence on wikipedia) and also been blocked is not a personal attack. Please remove the warning from my talk page. Thanks--Sikh-history (talk) 19:03, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you Tinu for not only your support, but for your kind words as well. To be honest, yep, I wish I would have been involved longer as well. I wish I would have signed up and started adding to the wiki years ago, but I am so glad now to be a member of our family. My very best to you my friend. ;) — Ched :  ?  05:54, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

You are welcome. Keep up the good work ! Best wishes -- Tinu Cherian 06:53, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Re:Your RFA

Thank you for your kinds words. I would've replied sooner, but I've been a tad bit busy in real life, and with the RfA itself. Thanks again, --Patar knight - chat/contributions 11:55, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
