Etymology

edit

Probably from やぶ (hade, breaking melody, in reference to a lively style of samisen playing),[1][2][3][4] or possibly a shift from haede, as a compound of (hae, shining; glory, the 連用形れんようけい (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb える (haeru, to shine; to be glorious, to be outstanding)) +‎ (te, hand; style, way, state).[1][2] The te changes to de as an instance of rendaku (連濁れんだく).

Appears from the late 1600s.[1]

The use of the character is an example of ateji ().
