Borrowed from Japanese タバコ (tabako, tobacco).

First attested as Early Modern Korean 담파고(あわばばしゅうと) (tamphakwo) in the Jibong yuseol (しばみねるいせつ / 지봉유설), 1614; thereafter, also attested variously as Early Modern Korean 담파귀 (tamphakwuy), 담바 (tampa), and 담ᄇᆡ (tampoy).
