editEtymology
editProbably from an unattested word *nois (genitive *nokiin) meaning a certain kind of fur animal, most likely beaver, marten or sable. Thus, Nokia would originally referred to a place where these animals lived, or more likely referring to a center of fur trade.[1] The Finnish word in question is not attested in any dialect, but may be from Proto-Finnic *nuksi, if it is akin to Estonian nugis (“marten”), although this is not certain. Alternatively, if the word specifically referred to black fur animals, it may be derived from noki (“soot”).
