Usage notes

edit

As an adverb, ilmi usually but not necessarily implies a change of state from unknown to known and so is mostly used with verbs that express change or movement. It is rarely used to describe a state of being known: asia on ilmi (the matter is out in the open) is possible, but rare. As a modifier, it is usually written as an open (spaced) compound together with adjectives, adverbs, and nouns, but only as a closed compound with verbs. Some commonly used collocations may be written both ways: ilmiselvä / ilmi selvä, ilmiliekki / ilmi liekki, ilmiriita / ilmi riita, and yet others are always closed: ilmiantaja, ilmianto, ilmiasu, ilmitulo.
