juoni
Finnish
editEtymology 1
editFrom Proto-Finnic *jooni, from Proto-Finno-Permic *jane, probably borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáHnam.[1] Cognates on the Uralic side include Estonian joon, Southern Sami joene (“road”) and Erzya ян (jan, “path”). Sense diversification from original "path" is particular to Finnic. Compare dialectal juntu (“path”).
