editFrom Old Swedish þranger, from Old Norse þrǫngr, from Proto-Germanic *þrangwaz (“pressing, narrow”), from *þrinhwaną (“to press”), from Proto-Indo-European *trenkʷ- (“to push, press”). Cognate with English throng, Icelandic þröngur, Nynorsk trong, German dringen.
