editFrom Proto-Slavic *osь, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱs-. Cognate with Upper Sorbian wóska, Polish oś, Czech os, Russian ось (osʹ), Old Church Slavonic ось (osĭ), and more distantly with English axis and axle.
