The Asia Institute at the Solbridge International School of Business is a research center that encourages international collaboration in addressing the challenges of environmental degradation in East Asia, the promise and threat of technological change, contemporary business and international relations in East Asia today.

The Asia Institute brings together scholars and practitioners from around the world to engage in a thoughtful investigation of the critical issues in business and policy and an investigation of viable solutions through international cooperation.

On the business side, the Asia Institute conducts research, coordinates between researchers and practitioners and hosts discussions and conferences about the needs of businesses in Asia for innovation in finance, logistics and marketing in order to keep pace with a changing world. The Asia Institute also carries out a range of activities relating to business and its role in society in cooperation with institutions around the world. These efforts involve specialists, businessmen and students. Current programs include The East Asia Middle East Initiative (EAMEI), The Korea India Technology and Business Initiative (KITBI), the SolBridge Non-Proliferation Initiative, the SolBridge Biotechnology Initiative, the Daejeon Green Growth Forum in cooperation with the Korean Ministry of the Environment and the Solbridge "Post-2008 Asian Finance Project."

In the policy realm, the Asia Institute conducts research on critical contemporary issues in society and the economy and holds focused seminars and international conferences involving representatives from business, government, academic institutions, NGOs and international organizations. The Asia Institute thereby generates original ideas for policy concerning major contemporary challenges by bringing together experts who would not otherwise engage in dialog.

At the same time, The Asia Institute coordinates among research institutes concerned with policy issues throughout Korea, Asia and beyond, bringing together experts from different fields working on similar issues. The Asia Institute focuses its attention on two issues: the challenge of balancing rapid technological change with social institutions and cultural traditions and strategies for responding to the threat of environmental degradation and an age of expensive energy. Specifically, the Asia Institute considers how technological change in communications technology has transformed international relations and how biotechnology has impacted society and the environment.

The Asia Institute is run by the Director, Emanuel Pastreich, the Program Director for the Korea-India Business and Technology Initiative, Neeru Biswas, the Program Director for the Korea-Japan Environmental Policy Initiative, Toraaki Nakamura and the Manager, Phillip Kang. David Bigman, the current Senior Researcher, leads a research project on trade and food security involving East Asia and the Middle East. The Asia Institute also has senior associates at major institutes and corporations around the world working on specific research and policy projects.
