The transmission they recieved was an accoustical beacon which repeated at intervals of twelve seconds, which the crew interperated as an SOS. Much later, The Nostromo's computer, Mother, deciphered part of the signal and found that it did not resemble an SOS but rather a warning. The transmission emanated from a derelict spacecraft of alien origin. Inside the derelict was an enormous alien life form that had been dead for a long time and since fossilised to his chair and a large telescopic structure, from which the transmission came. LV-426, also known as Acheron, is the name of the planet where the Alien was first encountered by humans in the movie Alien of the Alien Series.

Template:Spoiler

The planet is just short of Zeta II Reticuli, which is beyond the Outer Rim. The atmosphere consisted of nitrogen, crystalised carbon dioxide, and methane, as well as some other trace elements. The surface is rock, lava-base. And temperature is deep cold, well below the line.

The Nostromo intercepted a transmission of unknown origin from this planet. The seven crewmembers of The Nostromo were obligated by law to investigate this transmission which interrupted the course of their journey.

(See Alien)

In Aliens, terraformer colonists working with Weyland-Yutani Corporation set up large atmospheric processors to make the air breathable. They decreased temperature and made the planet "inhabitable" to say the least. They established a colony on LV-426 called "Hadley's Hope". The colony consisted of approximately sixty to seventy families, with a population of approximately 158.

At the end of "Aliens" the colony was destroyed by a thermonuclear meltdown. Whether or not the site was recolonised is unknown.
