Ruby Rees (born 1995) is an Australian actress, director and writer. She is best known for playing “Edith” a main character in Picnic at Hanging Rock (TV series), alongside Natalie Dormer and Samara Weaving. [1]
Career
Rees first appeared on screen as a baby in the 1996 Australian movie River Street (film).[2] From 2010, Rees starred in a number of short films Warhead , Once , A Frigid Night , Bracelet , Good Boy , “I Alien”, “Harvey” and The Hunt, as well as appearing on television in The Saddle Club (TV Series) 2008, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries” 2012, and Picnic at Hanging Rock (TV series) ” in 2018.[citation needed]
Writing and Directing
Ruby’s writing and directing career is surprisingly extensive for one so young, at the age of 15 she wrote and directed the award winning play “Serpents”, .[3] which was performed at the St Michael’s theatre, Melbourne, Australia in 2010. Rees directed the play “Neighbourhood Watch” at the age of 18, the short film “Alien” which was shortlisted for the Tropfest film festival Australia, in 2014”, .[4]
In 2014, she moved to New York City, where continued to write and direct plays with The Manhattan Repertory Theatre, her play “Kaston” debuting there in 2015. .[4] wrote the play “Bad religion” in 2016, and wrote and starred in the short film “Harvey”. Ruby Rees’s first venture into writing feature movies is the film “Women by the sea” which is essentially a film entirely about women due to hit the big screen in 2019. Rees is a big advocate of equality for women, and the production of this movie employs females only as a spotlight to demonstrate that females can and do speak out against inequality and sexism. [5]
