It was pointed out that winners were given very little time to give acceptance speeches, with numerous commentators singling out the moment when Neil Newbon was cut off by music sixty seconds into his acceptance speech. An image of a teleprompter reading “Please Wrap It Up” went viral on social media. The treatment of the award winners was contrasted with the treatment of celebrities, such as Simu Liu being given five minutes to talk about how he broke his foot. It was also pointed out that Hideo Kojima was given ten to fifteen minutes to discuss his upcoming game. Paul Tassi writing for Forbes stated that “the show itself has descended into a parody of everything it’s often accused of being,” and concluded with, “Yes, it’s always been an advertising showcase, but there was something in there that felt like it was trying to be a real awards show and honor games and creators. This year there was barely any of that at all, and it felt like any façade of this being about awards went out the window in favor of Hollywood stars, muppets and Hideo Kojima. It needs to do better.”
