The Hellaverse[1] is a fictional shared universe created by Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano, in which are set the events of the SpindleHorse Toons animated series Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. Comprising three distinct settings: Hell, Earth, and Heaven, the universe is based on many religious themes and literature.[2]

Pentagram City is the primary setting of Hazbin Hotel, where Princess Charlie Morningstar attempts to redeem Sinners and have their souls accepted into Heaven.

Imp City is the primary setting of Helluva Boss. Within it is the headquarters of Blitzo's human assassination company I.M.P (Immediate Murder Professionals).

Development

Although the development for the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel took 2½ years,[3] Medrano had been developing the universe since she was a teenager. Medrano based the universe on the stories she learned of as a Presbyterian as she grew up. In particular, the universe serves as an adaptation for some existing religious texts.[2]

Hell's Hierarchy

There exists a social hierarchy in Hell that plays a significant role in the series' narratives. Specifically among the main characters, Charlie's position as princess of Hell and the class difference between Blitzo and Prince Stolas are important to how their stories progress.

Below illustrates Hell's Hierarchy, from highest to lowest class.[4]

Class Description
Lucifer Morningstar Lucifer is the King of Hell. Being a fallen angel, he possesses power that surpasses that of anyone else in Hell.
Morningstar Family Lucifer's family consists of his wife, Lilith, the Queen of Hell, and Charlie, the Princess of Hell.
Seven Deadly Sins Hell consists of 7 rings that each represent the seven deadly sins. Each of the rings is ruled by a representative of its sin. They are as follows, in order of each ring's geographical location in Hell from top to bottom:[a]
Ars Goetia Members of the Ars Goetia, or simply goetic demons, are the lowest class that is considered demon royalty. The most notable member in Helluva Boss is Prince Stolas.
Overlords The Sovereign Overlords of Hell are Sinners who have gained a great amount of power through owning souls and as a result rule certain parts of Hell. The most notable member in Hazbin Hotel is Alastor.
Sinners Sinners are demons who were humans before their arrival in Hell. Sinners are the only demons subject to Heaven's extermination. They are also restricted to the Pride Ring. The first Sinner attempting to be redeemed to Heaven is Angel Dust.
Hellborn Hellborn demons are demons indigenous to Hell. They are present in and are able to travel through all 7 rings of Hell.[c] Hellborns include Succubi, Incubi, and other unknown species. Verosika is a succubus.
Imps & Hellhounds All Imps and Hellhounds, despite also being Hellborn species, consist of the lowest class in Hell. Helluva Boss centers around the employees of I.M.P, which are members of this class.
  1. ^ In Helluva Boss, the seven deadly sins are referred to as kings and queens (e.g. Queen Bee), unlike Binsfeld's classification of demons, which refer to them as princes.
  2. ^ Lucifer is both the King of the Pride Ring and all of Hell. All the other Deadly Sins are considered equal in class rank.
  3. ^ This includes Imps and Hellhounds.
