Gaia Education is an educational organization established to address the need for education in sustainable development and ecological design worldwide. It offers learning opportunities that incorporate holistic approaches to development, integrating ecological, social, economic, and cultural dimensions. The programs of Gaia Education aim to facilitate the transition of individuals and communities towards sustainability and resilience, based on principles of permaculture, ecological design, and systems thinking.[1]
Overview
Gaia Education was founded in the early 21st century, inspired by the work of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), an organization that connects and supports sustainable community initiatives around the world. Gaia Education's name draws from the Gaia Theory proposed by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which posits that the Earth functions as a self-regulating, complex system.
Gaia Education offers various educational programs, including the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE), online courses, and project-based learning initiatives, targeting a wide range of participants including students, educators, community leaders, and sustainability professionals. The organization operates internationally, conducting courses in multiple languages and cultural contexts, with the support of a network of educators and practitioners.
Impact and Recognition
Gaia Education's work has been recognized internationally for its contributions to education for sustainable development. The organization has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and is a contributing partner to the UNESCO Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development.[2] [3] [4] [5]
J.T. Ross Jackson, a significant figure in the sustainable development and global finance reform movements, played a pivotal role in the founding of Gaia Education, contributing his expertise and vision towards the development of its educational frameworks and global outreach
