Ivan Serov

Ivan Aleksandrovich Serov (Иван Александрович Серов in Russian) (8.13.1905 - 1990) was the head of KGB from March 13, 1954 until December 8, 1958, Army General.

In 1926, Serov became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1939, he graduated from the Frunze Military Academy and started his career in the Ministry of Internal Affairs in February of the same year. In 1939-1941, Serov was appointed People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1941-1945, he was the First Deputy People's Commissar of the State Security and later - Deputy People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the USSR. He was responsible for Katyn massacre - a mass execution of Polish officers by Soviets in 1940. In 1947-1953, Serov held the post of the First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the USSR. He would later become the head of KGB.
