Tony Parry was a footballer who played in central defence for Hartlepool United F.C. in the early 1970s. In 1972 the club were on the brink of going out of business but were saved by a £2,500 bid for Parry from former manager Brian Clough now at Derby County F.C.. It is usually regarded as a philanthropic gesture by Clough (albeit using Derby's money) as Parry only made four appearances for Derby and was soon sold on to Mansfield Town F.C..
