The iSlate, also referred to as the Apple Tablet or iPad,[1] is a rumored upcoming tablet computing device product from Apple Inc. Apple has not acknowledged rumors that it is developing a tablet of any sort or that any future product will be called iSlate.[2] Many observers expect Apple to announce the iSlate at a press event on January 27, 2010 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] The iSlate is expected to be sold starting in March 2010.[11][12]
The device is expected to incorporate a 10-inch (26 centimeter)[11][13] multi-touch display made by Innolux, a subsidiary of Foxconn.[14][13][15][16] The price is expected to be more than the iPhone but less than an Apple notebook computer[17][18] USD.[19] [20]
Yair Reiner claims the iSlate will compete in the market against dedicated e-book devices such as the Barnes & Noble nook and the Amazon Kindle while offering 70% of revenue to publishers, the same arrangement accorded developers of the App Store.[20][4] These arrangements would also extend to print publishers who currently receive less in digital work royalties from companies like Amazon.com.[4][21]
Trademark
On Tuesday, November 21, 2006, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for ISLATE.[22] This trademark is owned by Slate Computing (USA) LLC of Wilmington, Delaware.[23] Slate Computing apparently owns the rights to a second trademark named "Magic Slate".[23] The ISLATE trademark is filed in the category of Computer & Software Products & Electrical & Scientific Products . The description provided to the USPTO for ISLATE is Computers; computer software, namely, database management software, electronic mail and messaging software, Internet browser software, paging software, database synchronization software, software for accessing, browsing and searching online databases, software for creating spreadsheets, tables, graphs and charts, software for organizing and analyzing data, software for word processing, software for creation and display of presentations including text and graphics, software used for image editing.[22]
The USPTO has given the ISLATE trademark serial number of 77048955.[22] The mark is currently not issued, and has received a second extension to prove use in commerce on September 4, 2009.
Features
ILounge and Gizmodo claim two versions of the iSlate are expected to be initially available. One model will feature a webcam and a 3G modem.[17] It is likely to be compatible with applications from the App Store, as Apple has asked certain developers to adapt their existing applications for a larger screen.[24][3]
Reception
Dan Ackerman of CNET states that the iSlate will "blow everyone away."[25] Rafe Needleman of CBS News made mention to the iSlate as he panned tablet computers, saying that it is "attractive if you're a sci-fi fan or have an unlimited gadget budget" but that the lack of a physical keyboard makes them "an ergonomic disaster."[26]
Media event
On 18 January 2010 several media outlets announced[27][28] that they had received event invitations from Apple. There is no indication in the words "Come see our latest creation" (the invitation tagline) that it is anything to do with an iSlate device, but many believe it is.[29][28] The event will be held on 27 January 2010 at 10AM PST.[30]
