Optiwave Systems Inc. is a Canadian software company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. Optiwave develops and distributes computer-aided engineering software for the design and testing of photonic components and systems.

History[edit]

In the early 1990s, the National Optics Institute (INO) developed an optical modeling software to simulate the propagation of light in optical waveguides via the beam propagation method. This software, called BPM_CADきゃど, was exported to several countries before INO launched Optiwave Systems Inc. as a spin-off company,[1] where BPM_CADきゃど was re-branded into OptiBPM as Optiwave's first product.

In 1996, the company relocated its headquarters from Quebec City to Ottawa, Ontario.[2] In the late 1990s, Optiwave released its OptiGrating and OptiFiber products for the simulation of light propagation in optical gratings and optical fiber, respectively. In the 2000s, the company released photonic component-level simulation software (OptiMode, OptiFDTD) implementing a range of numerical solvers, including the alternating-direction implicit method, finite element method, and finite-difference time domain method. In addition, the company released its OptiSystem tool for the design and simulation of optical communications modules and systems.[3]

In the 2010s, Optiwave released a SPICE software, branded as OptiSPICE, to handle optoelectronic circuit simulation. In the late 2010s, OptiSPICE adopted a software plug-in model for compatibility with 3rd party EDA tools, such as Siemens EDA's Tanner.[4] Most recently, in the early 2020s, Optiwave partnered with EXFO to develop a software tool for automated testing of photonic integrated circuits.[5]
