MetaLab is an interface design firm headquartered in Victoria, British Columbia[1] that provides product management, software engineering and UX research services. Its clients include Slack, Google, Uber and Amazon.

MetaLab was founded in 2006 by Andrew Wilkinson. It is part of a larger group that includes Dribbble. MetaLab also founded Pixel Union, which provides themes for platforms like Tumblr, Shopify,[2] and WordPress.

Products

[edit]

MetaLab has the following products in its portfolio:

  • Ballpark is an online application that allows users to send invoices, receive payments, and bid on projects.[3]
  • Flow is a task management platform to create, organize, discuss, and accomplish tasks.[4] In March 2011 MetaLab announced the launch of Flow for the web, iPhone and iPad.[5][6] A redesign of Flow was released on 25 September 2013.[7]
  • Pixel Union is a collaboration between MetaLab and 45royale that creates curated internet themes for web pages and platforms.[8]

Mozilla

[edit]

In March 2010 Andrew Wilkinson (co-founder of MetaLab) wrote a blog post claiming that Mozilla "literally copied images straight off of our site" for use in the design of their FlightDeck editor.[9][10] The story, which was picked up by TechCrunch[11], caused Mozilla to tell Wilkinson that "[the] design which used [MetaLab's] site's design elements was a development build and according to [Mozilla] the design has been changed in newer builds." Wilkinson then requested a public apology.

Clients

[edit]

Companies which have used MetaLab services include Ro[12], Upwork,[13] Uber[14] and Calvin Klein.[15]
