Technically, if we were to use A(x) to denote a formula with a free variable x, the substitution of a for x would be written as A(x)(a/x), since A(x) produces a formula that includes a free variable x, and (a/x) substitutes it. Or, we can simply take A to be a formula that may or may not involve a free x, and apply the substitution to it. I think that's less confusing!
