old talk
[edit]Apparently in Bangladesh "Begum" pretty much means "Mrs"... AnonMoos 13:41, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
"signifying that they are void of care" What the heck does this mean? -- 16:53, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Completely agreed with you, the sentence does not make any sense. The word is clearly Turkic and is feminine of [[Bey]] (also Beg and Beigh). Also look The Free Dictionary . --Mehrdad 15:10, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
Changes
[edit]I removed some edits apparently relating to Mexico, that have nothing to do with the Asian word Begum. Soczyczi (talk) 09:34, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Religious Slur?
[edit]I've removed this
- In the United Kingdom, Begum has been increasingly used as a religious slur against headscarf-wearing Muslim women. It became associated with devout Islam and the practice of wearing the veil through the court case of Shabina Begum. [citation needed]
I've seen no evidence of this myself, and the "fact" has remained uncited for almost three years. Rojomoke (talk) 15:31, 6 December 2009 (UTC)
