Charlie Haughey's resignation

[edit]

Does anybody remember the night Haughey was forced to resign? There was Charlie reporting live on the 9pm news when a huge slew of Fianna Foulers in the background at government buildings burst into song: 'Charlie Bird, we love you, we do!...Charlie Bird we love you!....' He kept a straight face throughout the 5 minute report while the rest of Ireland laughed. Fantastic reporter. He makes every report seem like the most important news ever to hit the screen. Political involvement

[edit]

Perceived wisdom has it that Charlie was active in the Irish Republican Socialist party at some stage in his youth, and/or the Labour Party during the 70's. Can anyone shed any light on this and if so can they please make additions to the article? Agreed with El Gringo's comments above by the way, a true giant of Irish journalism.Cois na Camac 03:55, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protestant

[edit]

Can anybody clarify that Charlie Bird is a Protestant? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.49.121.204 (talk) 10:00, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Charlie Bird: a Stickie?

[edit]

Like many if not most Irish people, I have huge meas for Charlie. He is a born reporter and has a great way about him. A likable rogue! This article, however, claims Charlie was recruited into RTÉ by that reactionary reprobate Eoghan Harris. Is this verifiable? This article also claims that Charlie was a member of the Stickies/Workers'Party. Is this verifiable? The reason I ask is that I have never, ever seen a Sticky in Irish public life who has not held immense bitterness against their "civil war" enemies the Provos - yet Charlie was the central RTÉ figure dealing with the IRA's "P O'Neill" for decades. He has never shown the bitterness of Harris/de Rossa and the rest of those embittered West Brit losers. Is somebody trying to tarnish the man's reputation? 109.77.125.55 (talk) 14:34, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. I have his autobiography in front of me. He says himself that Harris came up to him the reference library in the Irish Times where he was working at the time, and actually speaks quite well of them. To your second point, it says he was a member of the Young Socialists, which merged into the Labour Party. He also was involved in Sinn Féin.
I would love to be able to improve and expand the article with more recent career developments, but don't have the time. Hope I cleared things up anyway!. Cheers —  Cargoking  talk  19:29, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
