[edit]As far as i know there is now at least one Gaelscoil in every county and they are experiencing a bit upsurge in interest possibly due to favorable economic conditions in Ireland where the Irish language and culture in the past might have been seen as a hindrance to economic success. i don't think schools in the gaeltacht count as gaelscoileanna! --Polo12345 13:38, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- According to ga:Gaelscoil, they don't. Is Gaelscoil usually capitalized in English or not? Angr/talk 13:48, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
i guess that makes this line wrong: gaelscoileanna are not just popular in the Gaeltacht. Gaelscoil is not capitalised on the "gaelscoileanna.ie" website. --Polo12345 15:55, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
well websites dont tend to use capitals anyway.
Schools in the Gaeltacht are Gaelscoileanna obviously, they are not mentioned on the Gaelscoileanna website as they are funded separately. Gaelscoil, basically means Irish language school and schools in the Gaeltacht are Irish language schools. Frainc 22:15 10 January 2007
List of individual schools
[edit]I think the list is appropriate. This edit:[1] Not only removed the long lists, but cut schools that are wikilinked to their own articles. I felt it was more apt to link from the list than where they were under "See also". Some of the schools are listed here because their individual articles were AfD'd, but one of the criteria of the AfD was that they be merged here. In light of this history, I lean towards loosening up on the lists thing. Some lists like this are their own articles, and while the lists are long and a bit tedious (believe me, I alphabetised some of them), in general I think the article is better with the lists than without; if nothing else so any later articles can be spun out from here. The linked policy does not rule out lists. If you want to delete them again, please do not just revert but let's discuss here. - Kathryn NicDhàna ♫♦♫ 20:58, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
(back after looking over them some more) Damn, that's a long list. I don't know. I don't think they should all be cut, and certainly those with their own articles should be kept, but I do agree the lists dominate the article to an overwhelming degree. - Kathryn NicDhàna ♫♦♫ 21:29, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Statistics
[edit]The mathematics in the opening paragraph are incorrect. "This puts the number at 10.4% of students attending Irish-medium education. Although, some English-medium schools offer class's in Irish, at current 25.5% of students study certain subjects in the Irish language. This puts 36% of students being taught entirely or partially in the Irish language." 36% is way off. Using the numbers in the Statistics section, the number of students "being taught entirely or partially in the Irish language" is actually 5.6%. Conorbrady.ie (talk) 07:35, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Mistake
[edit]Gaelscoil is really just a primary school, the proper term for a secondary school is gaelcholáiste. This really should be broken into two different pieces. Rinagaeilge (talk) 11:49, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
- There seems to be a precedent set for Scottish Gaelic and Welsh to have articles named Gaelic medium education and Welsh medium education respectively. Perhaps this article could be renamed Irish medium education, and have Gaelscoil and Gaelcholáiste redirect to it? Conorbrady.ie (talk) 23:30, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, this should be changed — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.254.189 (talk) 12:47, 31 October 2013 (UTC)
Opening Paragraph is a mess
[edit]The opening paragraph should introduce the topic, and give a brief overview of it, instead of haggling over figures of attendance. I suggest we revamp the article, and have a section dedicated to figures, and leave it out of the opening paragraph. Dornálaíocht (talk) 17:53, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Revision
[edit]I have extensively revised the article and have removed a great many statistics which had no supporting references. These figures can be reinstated if sources are found. Colin Ryan (talk) 22:02, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
- Sources are definately needed for figures. Mabuska (talk) 22:49, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
Changes
[edit]I have updated the figures for gaelscoil attendance and have removed extraneous material about the total number of Irish speakers.
Colin Ryan (talk) 11:31, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
Removed contradiction
[edit]This sentence "There are only nine counties nationally that do not have a secondary level Irish-medium school: Laois, Offaly, Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Sligo, Longford, Fermanagh and Down." contradicts a sentence that just came before. The previous sentence says that Coláiste Féirste is the only gaelcholáiste in Northern Ireland, which would mean that 5 of the 6 counties of NI do not have gaelcholáistí, but only one of the 5 is mentioned in this list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.254.189 (talk) 12:43, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Proposed merger of Gaelcholáiste into Gaelscoil
[edit]A Gaelscoil is a school (primary or secondary) in Ireland in which the teaching is done through the Irish language. A Gaelcholáiste is a Gaelscoil at secondary level. There isn't very much material at Gaelcholáiste, which just has some general introductory text, then a section setting out new Gaelcholáisti that were established in the 2010s, and then a list of Gaelcholáistí. Gaelscoil already has a section on Gaelcholáistí ("Post-primary education through Irish"). I propose merging Gaelcholáiste into that section. Gatepainter (talk) 13:27, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- Support For the most part "Gaelcholáiste" is double. The Banner talk 14:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
- Suport Some second-level Irish schools are known as gaelscoileanna, so a split is possibly misleading. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 11:07, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
I've done that merger, on foot of the unanimous support above.Gatepainter (talk) 14:07, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- That is a bit on the quick side but I do not object. The Banner talk 14:31, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
