Proper names

I wanted to update the names in this article to reflect their proper romanized Japanese names. Unfortunately, it's not easy to do this because finding somewhere from a Japanese source where their names are romanized is nigh on impossible. "Ail and Ann" is a fan spelling, and doesn't reflect the romaji in their names and messes up the "alien" pun. I'm tempted to go with "Eiru" or "Ali" for the male because "Eiru" would be right for the pun in Japanese, and "Ali" is right for the pun in English and ADV did use it. "An" or "En" would be righht for the girl to either be consistant with the katakana or consistent with the English pun. Is there a better way to settle this without resorting to fan preference alone? "Ail and Ann" has been wrong for years and now is as good a time as any to settle this using canon. Rebochan 15:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Metaria was one thing because people call her that anyway, so it was a choice between common names, one of which was official. Ali and En were totally made up, in fairly recent years, by the subbers, and I've never seen anyone use Eiru and An in my life. Ail and Ann imply the correct pronunciation and are by far the most common; I think that's what we need to use.

I gave it a shot, using the combination of "(name) and (name)" "sailor moon" - 115 articles came up as "Ail and Ann", 10 for "Ali and En", and 1 each on "Eiru and En" and "Eiru and An". Now, because you brought up "most commonly used", I included "Alan and Ann", which beat all of the Japanese versions. So by Google hits alone, Japanese be damned, dub wins. Of course, this is without combing them for entries from the same sites and entries that have nothing to do with the characters. Still, "Ail and Ann" was made up by the fans. "Eiru and An" is the katakana reading. Other articles do use correct names regardless of pronunciation or fan usage - for example, everyone in the SuperS film - because they're the correct names. "Ail and Ann" is also not correct pronunciation because "Ail" would sound like "Aisle" in Japanese.

Half the problem is that we have to try and translate their names because nobody ever romanized them and they're a pun based on an English word. The official subs came almost a decade after the show aired, but they did get the pun right. "Ail and Ann" implies the pun is based only on sound when it was also a written pun. The articles have currently also tried to get close to the intended word - which is why the Animamates use "Aluminum Siren" and not "Seiren" even though she pronounces it that way.

I can't find an explanation for that Wikipedia policy, but somehow I doubt it was intended to keep fan names from series that have already been well-translated, but rather for series that are not widely available and could have multiple translations. Otherwise we'd be rewriting articles for every single anime series on this site to remove names that don't Google the highest. For example, "Chrno Crusade" has over 900,000 hits while "Chrono Crusade" has a third of that. Rebochan 17:17, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I believe the current fan theory on Aluminum Seiren/Siren is that Takeuchi meant to use the Greek term "Seiren". As for the aliens, I like what we've got, but I think that if we should change, we should change to what's on the official subbed DVDs.-Malkinann 03:31, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Interesting Trivia

The reanalysis of R had flashbacks to this time, however, all flashback episodes that refer to the entire season of Sailormoon ommited this section out. For example in th review of the previous seasons, SuperS special left this part out. Then in Sailorstars, it was the same thing. There were no flashbacks to this time. In fact all mentions of this time after this point seem to have been omitted except in th review of the season which isn't counted as a "real" episode, but a memorial. The SuperS Special where the Vampire episode debuted there is a review of the whole Sailormoon seasons up to that point. Usagi is explaining to Chibiusa (never aired in the US.) So Usagi narrates and boasts, however this section was never mentioned. Then there was another recap in Stars at the end of the series with images. None of the images from Ail and Anne ever showed. Each season had it's own memorial. However, these weren't so much "episodes" as recaps of what happened and teasers for the next season. The SMR one *did* show that section, but there was no mention of it after. Many of these memorials were half-adlibbed as well. The point though is that there seems to be no recap mention of the first part of R, like it never happened and is actually an AR....--Hitsuji Kinno 02:45, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
