Quotes
[edit]I don't think there needs to be a "quotes" section. Any reason not to delete it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.41.137.144 (talk • contribs)
- The section has been deleted, since the information has not been verified. Also, please sign your posts. Thanks. Real96 17:49, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Opening paragraph
[edit]Isn't it a bit misleading to say "Academy award nominated" when the nomination was only for makeup ? -- Beardo (talk) 02:01, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes it is, it should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.56.222.7 (talk) 06:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
- Technically, it's correct, but man, it sure does pain me to see that. "Academy award nominated" should only be on the Wikipedia page for "Norbit" if it's preceded by "did not deserve to be". 75.157.251.37 (talk) 05:23, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
It has been written that it was nominated for Make Up. If true, then I believe it did deserve to tbe nominated. But who goes to see a moviie because of the Make Up? 86.142.221.44 (talk) 06:33, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
- It's not misleading at all when you read more of the sentence, "Norbit is an Academy Award nominated and Golden Raspberry Awards winning comedy film..." The irony of the fact that it was both an Oscar nominee and a Raspberry winner is part of what is notable about the film. It's also good writing in that it's an excellent teaser to the reader to read the rest of the article to find out about this odd juxtaposition of accolade and insult. Soundtrack section
[edit]Why does it say at the bottom of the soundtrack section the following: "Bobby Doner-as restbutia boyfreind" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.54.209.66 (talk) 19:03, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- It was a bit of vandalism that was posted at 22:44 on 12 February 2008. It was erased by Cstaffa (talk · contribs) at 06:03 on 24 February 2008. Thanks Cstaffa! --Ashanda (talk) 15:30, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Rasputia Latimore-Rice?
[edit]In a scene in the movie, Rasputia flat out tells Kate that her name "ain't no damn Mrs. Rice!" when Kate introduces herself at the carnival. That should be changed to just Rasputia Latimore. 65.43.96.3 (talk) 16:11, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
Sources
[edit]- Neary, Lynn. "Rasputia: A Comic Type, or a Racial Stereotype?" NPR. February 26, 2007.
WhisperToMe (talk) 20:25, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
- That isn't a very good source, it is very short and only gently suggest that the grotesque stereotypes in the film might be problematic. It does link to another more interesting article:
- In which Kristal Brent Zook, author of "Black Woman's Lives: Stories of Power and Pain" eloquently puts the problems into a cultural and historical context (but ultimately undercuts the whole premise of getting offended on behalf of others by accepting maybe people "just needed a good laugh"). While it is an interesting attempt to use popular culture to start a deeper discussion, I wouldn't try to add undeserved depth or subtext to this shallow film. -- 109.79.161.65 (talk) 16:33, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
Morbidly obese
[edit]Not for the first time, someone seems to object to the phrase morbidly obese. This technical term seemed like the fairest most accurate way to describe the character, it would be inaccurate to describe this character as merely fat or overweight. Rasputia makes Big Momma look small, and although the humor is crude, there is no cause to censor or pretend it is something other than it is. -- 109.78.239.73 (talk) 20:15, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
- The previous wording made unhelpful references to the race of the characters, which is irrelevant and that was why I initially thought the image description had been blanked and needed to be improved. However, the enormous size of the character and her abuse of the main character is the crude core of the story, and there's no excuse to censor it. -- 109.78.239.73 (talk) 20:18, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
Again it is misleading and inaccurate to claim that Rasputia is merely "overweight" that is a gross understatement.(diff) The fictional character is very morbidly obese and it is bizarre to claim otherwise. -- 109.76.134.133 (talk) 13:56, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
Makeup
[edit]As this film won an Oscar for Best Makeup it would be better if the article included detailed information about this and other Production information. I will try to gather some sources here:
- Ryder, Caroline (12 February 2008). "'Norbit'". Variety.
- "Digital Dimension Weighs In On Norbit". Animation World Network.
I will do it myself eventually, but if anyone else wants to expand this article with Production details please go ahead. -- 109.78.201.245 (talk) 12:23, 30 August 2019 (UTC)
- Empire magazine did a feature on Rick Baker, it mentions Norbit only briefly but it be useful source because it describes Rasputia as another of Rick Baker's "monster creations". -- 109.76.196.225 (talk) 00:47, 20 September 2019 (UTC)
- Finally, used those sources to add some details to the Production section. -- 109.76.144.154 (talk) 02:09, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Salary of $20 million.
[edit]Eddie Murphy got paid a salary of $20 million for this film and a cut of the gross. Probably ... almost certainly, but I'm not sure the source I found is enough to meet the standard of an encyclopedia, a New York Times article about Eddie Murphy's $20 million salary (Web Archive copy) which says "Mr. Murphy still asks for $20 million a picture and a cut of the gross". Norbit was made in 2007, the Times article is from 2009. So while the source doesn't directly say he got paid $20 million for Norbit it does make it clear that was his standard asking price. Unfortunately I don't think the Times article is enough by itself but maybe someone can find another source to confirm if he got paid his asking price for Norbit and add it to the Production section. -- 109.79.171.255 (talk) 16:39, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
Liz Braun’s Review
[edit]I tried to remove Liz Braun’s review of Norbit (under Reception) but my changes were reverted back. I argued that some of the comments she made were irrelevant to the movie and also completely inappropriate towards Thandie Newton.
If it needs to stay because it’s a review, I could understand that. However, the link to her article is broken/can’t be found. I believe it should be removed all together. Thoughts? Thank you! Jimmysmitzismyhero72 (talk) 16:43, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- Liz Braun seems to be as good a critic as any other. WP:DEADREF "Do not delete a citation merely because the URL is not working." A web link to the review might not be readily accessible but I'd be surprised if the review was not archived deep a in a commercial library of Canadian newspapers somewhere.
- Offensive is subjective ... it is especially weird and difficult to discuss what might be offensive in the context of this film. I'm not even convinced the comment was
towards Newton
, the critic could have been trying to imply something about Eddie Murphy and his encounter with Shalimar Seiuli, which was much more in the public mind at the time. - I do not support removing the review but there might be a reasonable argument for shortening that overly long quote. -- 109.76.129.23 (talk) 00:50, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Mr. Hangten Wong
[edit]Where in the film is Mr. Wong's first name ever stated? I've seen the film multiple times, and I've never heard Mr. Wong addressed as Hangten at any point. Jackman96 (talk) 14:01, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
- WP:FILMCAST should be listed as they were credited. I removed the first name as it was not included in the credits. -- 109.76.129.23 (talk) 00:37, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
